09. Name Names [2:52]
10. Legs.Limbs.Wings [3:51]

Info

Often compared to the distant early nineties scene of Vermin Scum, Dischord, and Gravity Records, Sinaloa brings the fire of that era's DIY punk and combines it with a grown-up sensibility and a lot of life experience. This is music as lifestyle, and lifestyle as music: deep personal history meets a life in independent music, and the results are a rare breed of idealism and practicality
Their newest, Oceans of Islands, picks up where their last two left off: emotive, driving, heartfelt anthems full of dueling vocals, meandering melodies, and slow-burning crescendos. Recorded at Providence, RI's Machines with Magnets (Battles, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), and featuring the trumpet stylings of Forbes Graham (Erase Errata, the One AM Radio) on two songs, Oceans of Islands is perhaps the best yet showcase for Sinaloa's idiosyncratic drums, guitars, and no bass setup.
As always, all three members do vocals—"Sinaloa is a state: Everybody sings," goes the band's motto. Fittingly, the first words on Oceans of Islands are "There's a story in each room": a perfect summary of the band's obsessively attentive and compassionate lyrical outlook. After so many years together, the trio is tighter than ever, and Oceans of Islands is their loudest, most joyful record to date.

Wildildlife aren't for everyone. Many folks
will be turned off by the band's penchant
for long songs, or simply alienated by the
disparate elements thrown into the mix.
But it's incredibly refreshing to hear something
come down the pipe that isn't banal trendhopping
or beating a dead horse. Anyone willing to
invest the time and attention span to
acquaint themselves with Wildildlife's mix
of shoegaze, metal, tribal rhythms and 70's
psychedelic rock will find one
of the more rewarding albums of 2007.

9. Mississippi Delta Force [4:07]

Info

The Heuristic is a Boston-based clan whose aggressive dissonance, spacey jazz-rock interludes, and understated production assist in creating the nine-track, 17-minute PARAPRAXES. Warping your ears with as much indie rock flare as math-rock muscle, there’s also elements of shoegazing elegance amongst the cacophonous carnage, allowing this quintet the ability to maim at any given moment, then suddenly lament about its actions. This CD covers a broad range of emotions and moves very quickly much like a tumultuous storm that leaves you helplessly seeking shelter from. If you dig bursts of insanity wrapped inside atmospheric rock, The Heuristic will serve you proper.

07. 7 [2:09]
08. 8 [1:01]
09. 9 [1:59]
10. 10 [10:46]

Info

Grindcore; recent years have seen a revival of sorts for a genre that was once reserved only for crusties with speed fixations and a love of squatting. Thanks to the likes of Discordance Axis (who redefined the blueprint), and more recently the spastic art-blur of the Locust, grind has found itself moving further and further to the forefront of the extreme music hierarchy.

Ohio's Robinson offer forth a platter of high-octane chaos on this, their first proper musical outing. A remastered version of their 2005 demo (with three added tracks), ‘The Great City' is an blasterpiece of epic proportions. Split into four ‘chapters', the album opens with the original seven tracks from the demo (each track is numbered, rather than named) and drawing on a wide range of influences, from Converge and Orchid to Red Sparrows and Isis, the band smash their way through all of them in little over 8 minutes. Fusing understated technical ability and a drummer who just wants to be fast all the time, the band create a sheer wall of noise that recalls the likes of hardcore legends Reversal Of Man for sheer guitar chaos and depth, but with the punk attitude of someone like Spazz or the later Brutal Truth material, a non-stop barrage of face-melting speed. Even the slower, more doomy moments are littered with blasts (strange considering the meandering, solemn hanging chords) and the intensity just doesn't let up - it's like being trampled by a herd of raging buffalo.

The final three tracks pick up where the demo left off, each track representing another chapter in the story. Lyrically (and also artistically) the music follows a story of sorts, a poetic rambling of apocalyptic imagery, which works wonderfully with the dark, barren artwork in the CD. As the tale unfolds and ultimately climaxes the chaos gives way to a more hypnotic, brooding aftermath, the last chapter being a single eleven minute atmospheric sludge fest. For the first time, the chaos and uber-speed is gone, leaving the smoking, charred remains to fester and unfold before us in a sickening manner.

Robinson really have given us something special. Littered with enough hooks to satisfy ‘the kids', and dark and dirty enough to satisfy even the most underground of grind nerds, ‘The Great City' is one twisted ride into the unknown. Evidence enough that evil still exists in music, even if it does have a name that recalls Simon and Garfunkel.

Info

9. Sekret Redem [4:32]

Info

Sometimes music just needs to be experimental, challenging, chaotic and yet at the same time beautiful and pure. Coventry’s Sika Redem are all of this – and some. Indeed here is a band that take thinking man’s rock into a totally new dimension. Mixing the chaos of The Dillinger Escape Plan and Eden Maine with the brooding atmospherics of Mono, Isis and Mogwai, Sika Redem don’t copy – they reinvent popular genres to create moods not experienced before. ‘Entheogen’ – the band’s debut album - takes the listener on a dark journey, through peaks and valleys of emotion and moods. From the haunting epic opener of ‘The October Bird Of Death’, to adventurous ‘The Protagonist Fails, The Pugilist Falls’ right through to closer ‘Sekret Redem’ – this is an album that truly deserves to be described as unique.

Info

Lack is easily one of the more interesting indie rock acts out there right now. Going from clarity to clarity, I thought that "Be there pulse" (2005) was an excellent display of Fugazi-sounding hard-hitting rock, they now release a breathtaking album of furious and melodic punk-/indie rock. In fact, the Danes have found what I've been looking for in their previous albums; a delicate mix of hardcore and hooks. Not many bands accomplish that, At the Drive-In, Refused, Drive Like Jehu and Shellac did it, and here are the Danish heirs. Clocking in under an exemplary 30 minutes "Saturate every atom" offer its listeners a concise journey where Denmark's asylum policy, male domination, among others are matters of discussion and as an old hardcore dude, my eyes are filled with tears. It's been a long time since something this compassionate sounded this good. Produced by Per Cnöeldh (Menfolk), mixed by Lack in true DIY-style and mastered by none other than Bob Weston from Shellac, the simple, yet powerful sound gives the band justice. And speaking of justice, nothing would be more unfair if this doesn't lead to further recognition. It is that good. Try it, you'll like it!

5. Lungs [4:31]
6. Bound And Hagged [4:19]
7. Get High And Fuck [6:35]
8. Dumb Luck [3:09]

Info

Drew at Translation Loss seems to have a real ear for music. He was able to tie down the likes of Rosetta, Mouth of the Architect, Intronaut, and now Fight Amputation. Coming straight out of the New Jersey basement scene (though they sound more like they belong in Kentucky alongside the likes of Young Widows, Lords, Pusher, and Coliseum), Fight Amputation embodies the true spirit of punk rock, hardcore, and noise rock. On the album's opening jam, "Dead is Dead", the drum beat and subsequent guitar riff will fade you into this solid album.

“Dead is Dead” displays Fight Amp in all of their glory, their dingy, dirty, gritty glory. I’m somehow shocked that grit and fuzz doesn’t come flying out of my stereo when rocking this disc. It takes me back to my youth, back to the days of small venues full of thrashing noisy bands that are now shut down. That taken to heart, Hungry for Nothing is exactly what I’ve been looking for as of late, a genre destroying album that leaves nothing but devastation in its wake.

Interestingly enough, Fight Amp doesn’t seem to hit a dull patch on the album. Between the back and forth banter of noise rock and punk rock and the six and a half minute long stoner epic “Get High and Fuck”, the band built a dynamic sound that denies critics the ability to question their songwriting skills. Distorted bass lines, arbitrary guitar riffs, and punishing drums beats create the canvas that vocalist Pat splatters his compelling and vehement vocal style all over.

The grooves on this album are simply undeniable. Fight Amp has a knack for building a groove into a monumental work, just listen to “Late Bloomer” on the band’s myspace and you’ll see exactly what I mean. You will get sucked in by this album just like I did. With eight tracks clocking in at exactly thirty-two and a half minutes, Hungry for Nothing is exactly what this music world needs more of, a creative look at an old favorite.

Info

This is strange stuff. Though I hear hints of the hardcore-apocalypse style of Bloodlet and elements of Neurosis, especially with the chosen acoustic style, Forced to Decay can, to some extent, be termed "death metal". They owe nothing to the Floridian take on the style, being totally devoid of bass heavy production or relentless kick-drumming, but do hark back to those of a more death/grind persuasion. Vocals alternate between very harsh screaming and quite melodic singing of sorts. When you listen carefully and "explore" _Perkussive Perlokution_, it is pretty interesting. The use of dynamics is commendable, though not unique, and the overall feel the album emanates is one of discomfort, which seems likely to have been one of the aims. Ultimately, my problem is that it doesn't strike the right balance with me. If the band achieved what they were trying to, then I have insufficient interest in their chosen style of music. Forced to Decay seem to have put quite a bit of effort into this with some success, and that is always commendable.
