INFO
Unrelenting! Explosively powerful creative thrash marked with tough metallic breakdowns, floor- punching chunka-chunka, and raucous female vocals. Speeding hardcore filled with abrasive twists and turns, violent vocal trade offs and dark and thoughtful lyrics. SCROTUM GRINDER is composed of members of the bands HANKSHAW (though they sounds nothing alike), FAILURE FACE, along with Steve Kosiba, who was in Misery Index-era ASSUCK and lead vocalist, Michelle who is a punk rock crowd-leaping terror and later sang in MOMENTO MORI! By no means a repeat of past bands or sounds, this tears with inventiveness and imagination while still keeping even keel with a destructive hardcore path, an apocalyptic dark ride with lyrical hope and inspiration as a guide... and yes, Prank knows the band name is terrible!

MÖNSTER was formed in May 2004 by Alexandre (BORN DEAD ICONS, ex-THE BLACK HAND), Jobst (ex-PEACE OF MIND, ex-HIGHSCORE), Marek (INSUICIETY/drums, ex-DYSMORFOFOBIA/drums) and Matthias (ex-A THIN RED LINE, ex-COSTA..S CAKE HOUSE).
The band started as a project, but after realizing that such a good chemistry shouldn..t be blown off in the air, decision was made to take it out of the practice space. The first two concerts confirmed that the audience could also relate to this energy. In terms of sound, comparisons have been made to the modern Swedish-Crust-Portland sound with a good measure of rocking riffs and a classic straight forward hardcore feel.
The CD contains all their songs released so far only on 7inches + a previously unreleased bonus track!

This one was laying around close to my stereo for some – oh my gosh! – I think months now. I listened to it regularly but never found the time or ease or words to get down to a review. Which I am sorry about, because a) it is an independent and modern release on a small label from a French label and b) it offers great post-hardcore of the complex and emotional (WMOS) as well as of the raudy and noisy screaming side (Ximel). Both things are usually intriguing to me and never fail to catch my attention. Maybe I was just getting used to the sight of the nice bluish-grey cover next to my CD-player that I blended it out of my conscious perceptance. Well, let’s get it over with, it definitely is deserved.
Apart from all the discussions about sound quality and business tactics, overprizing and copyright enforcement, one thing is clear: the concept of a split release has clearly deteriorated with the introduction of the Compact Discs. Because it is one-sided[1]. Simple enough, and that means, that an order of the bands is established. I fondly remember those double-A-sided vinyl platters, with one band on the one side and the other on the other side. That imposed a sort of equality upon the bands and liberty and emancipation on the listener, who was free to decide, which side would be his favourite, his a-side. Well, that’s gone and since it is no use to cry about spilled milk and what’s done is done, I’ll leave it at that. But I’ll mention Weeping Minds Of Silence first, because they are the first band and Ximel second, because they are. One more word beforehand: both bands get five songs to show their talents and that is just fair enough.
Weeping Minds Of Silence offer a complex and emotional dynamic that is usually called post-hardcore. Songs take their time to evolve, to grow and to finally erupt into the explosive and impressive bits they have hidden in their core from the beginning. For minutes they are content of going at it without vocals at all, giving the listener time to relax. They never get harsh or overtly brutal, not at all, no screaming and shouting there. No heads banged against walls till the blood comes. WMOS remain in control and in command of the tidal wave of music they produce. Well, they have been around for quite some years, so it is to be expected that they have gotten rid of the youthful eagerness to trash about in chaotic excitement during those years. Think of quieter bands on ebullition, if you will (Policy of 3 always were some of my favourites) but more melodious and amicable than them. Every band that reaches the stage where sound becomes more important than songs is enviable for that truly revolutionary step. (Just don’t start talking about Brian Eno to them.)
In spite of all that said about Weeping Minds of Silence, I actually find myself preferring Ximel. (Already in the olden days it was always usus to name your favourite band when reviewing a split-release.) And solely for the pure intensity and old-fashioned noise-rock they deal. In my experience there is an old-fashioned noise-rock band in every region. In Austria you might turn to Bug or Turn Out or Sensual Love. When in Portugal turn to Ximel. The classic three-piece formation, reigning the parade of noise bands ever since Jimi Hendrix lit a guitar on fire on stage and then rammed it into oversized amps. Heavy bass and guitar-riffs, distorted screaming, banging drums – every noise rock cliché you have been looking for, you’ll get it with Ximel. There might be a lot of thought or (political) message in the lyrics of Ximel, but actually I ain’t interested. That guitar sound, those unrelenting songstructures and that destructive-aggressive atmosphere of the music are all that I need to know. The global language of noiserock, a call to arms for all dissatisfied and disgruntled citizens of the western world.

I believe "In the Event of a Blackout" is the first recorded output from Cathedrals, and what an awesome little demo this is. 11 tracks, 13-and-a-half minutes, and that's all she wrote. But, whew, their combination of crushing heaviness and burly His Hero is Gone dissonance with energetic bursts of hyperactive and lightly melodic hardcore makes for a memorable listen that definitely leaves you wanting more. The contrast of such explosive bursts of tactful speed and such a dark, dismal midpaced crunch may seem somewhat odd, but believe me it works (as you'll hear below), and I'm pretty god damn surprised that these cats haven't been scooped up by a label yet. This disc is so damn short I really don't even know what else to say here. This is intense, powerful, open-minded, creative hardcore… and I'm damn sure all for it.

No rays from the holy heaven come down on the long night-time of that town; but light from out the lurid sea streams up the turrets silently- gleams up the pinnacles far and free- up domes- up spires- up kingly halls- up fanes- up Babylon-like walls- up shadowy long-forgotten bowers of sculptured ivy and stone flowers- up many and many a marvellous shrine Wwose wreathed friezes intertwine the viol, the violet, and the vine. resignedly beneath the sky the melancholy waters lie. so blend the turrets and shadows there that all seem pendulous in air, while from a proud tower in the town death looks gigantically down.

Always A Six, Never A Nine is the second album and the follow up to the 2006 self-titled debut from Portland, OR aggro wreckers Black Elk, whose psychotic brand of crushing, noise-rock influenced heaviosity is a return to the unhinged underground rock force of bands like Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Black Flag and Hammerhead. This new album features ten songs of seething weirdness, with the dissonant, crushing riffage, lunging rhythmic push and awesome freaked out, Yow-esque vocals of singer Tom Glose that made their debut a fave among anyone who remembered the days when Amphetamine Reptile ruled the underground rock scene, but with some interesting new elements (bleak, blackened guitar ambience, a smattering of piano, skyreaching guitar harmonies, etc.) that add new shadows to Black Elk's ferocious sound.

Coming from Caen, France, Aussitôt Mort (as soon as dead in french) began playing together in early 2005 : soon after the Apollo Program break up, Antoine, Milouze and Greg decided they wanted to carry on making music together... They teamed up with good friends and great musicians Pierre (also bassplayer in Amanda Woodward) and Cédric (from the experimental-post-rockish local band None-Id). No rules were set, no boundaries erected, just the usual “making music you like with good friends” thing. They first tried to create a new style, “emo-doom”, which could have been called “emoom”, or “doomo”, but they kind of failed. Several months later, some songs have been put together, recorded in le Studio de la Souleuvre, a remote studio in the Normandy countryside. During the process, some played french bowls, a dead mouse was found in a bed, things went pretty good.

This album is the Hondarrabia group's second. Harsh rock working with (its own) personality where the influences of punk, hardcore and metal styles are patent. Karlos Osinaga, member of the Lisabö group, just as he did in "Askatu Korapiloa" from Dut and with "Ezarian" from Lisabö, has done all the recording and, with his help, this quintet from Hondarrabia has moulded and concentrated and strengthened their sound on this new album the result is there to be heard.

Their "demo" cd hit me by surprise and I really couldn't refuse to put this out! These folks come from Gothenburg in lovely Sweden and deliver the goods! The demo (minus 1 song though) that you'll find on this black piece of vinyl hold 4 times thundering death and black metal soaked doom, with hints of crust, as well as atmospheric and epic darkness. The guitars range from devastating heaviness to gloomy acoustic sections, with piercing leads that flash through the darkness every now and then. If you've ever wanted to know exactly how your favourite metal, crust, and doom bands would have sounded like if they were one band this is where you should turn. I won't namedrop anything, just ask you to take me on my word that you really need to check this out if you've been even the slightest intrigued with what's written above. Even though I could drop many influential names, as well as list several of your favourite Swedish crustcore bands in the "members of" department. First 1100 copies comes in a nicely done gatefold.
