INFO

Unrelenting! Explosively powerful creative thrash marked with tough metallic breakdowns, floor- punching chunka-chunka, and raucous female vocals. Speeding hardcore filled with abrasive twists and turns, violent vocal trade offs and dark and thoughtful lyrics. SCROTUM GRINDER is composed of members of the bands HANKSHAW (though they sounds nothing alike), FAILURE FACE, along with Steve Kosiba, who was in Misery Index-era ASSUCK and lead vocalist, Michelle who is a punk rock crowd-leaping terror and later sang in MOMENTO MORI! By no means a repeat of past bands or sounds, this tears with inventiveness and imagination while still keeping even keel with a destructive hardcore path, an apocalyptic dark ride with lyrical hope and inspiration as a guide... and yes, Prank knows the band name is terrible!

Autumn Delay - The Pulse

TRACKLIST
01- Mere Construct
02- Safe From Harm
03- Deadender
04- The Pulse

INFO

AUTUMN DELAY started out March 2004. Their debut recordings resulted in a split cd with “The Black Heart Rebellion” on Offerandum records and received some very positive reviews. They played non-stop all over Belgium and played tours in Spain, France, Suisse and the United Kingdom. Just recently, AD recorded a 4 track EP. It consists of 4 new songs that demonstrate a full-grown and matured band. A band who recorded an honest EP, trying to represent their powerful live reputation. And above all a band that refuses to be yet another copy of whatever’s doing good at the time.

Interlude - 10000 ans de vengeance

TRACKLIST

02. El undécimo episodio
03. Suivons ravis l’inertie du monde
04. El valor de otra ocasión perdida
05. Un discours pour l’élite
06. L’élan de ma volonté
07. La cage en or

INFO

INFO

Kicking and screaming their way out of sunny Brighton, (UK), The Ghost Of A Thousand lay out their mission statement amidst the opening track's, ('Bored Of Math'), controlled fury; " punk rock needs you again. Generation X is dead" they scream over demented fits of controlled rage. It's one hell of a way to open a record! And what a record it is!.

'Left For Dead' comes next and there isn't a single let up in the ferocious delivery. " I'm sick of seeing the same kids at shows" screams vocalist Tom Lacey, seemingly disillusioned with the scene they are trying to escape, before asking " what is it where looking for?" like a man who knows he may never find the answer. 'Up To You' is a volatile mix of cascading, violent drums and playfully scathing guitars while album highlight 'New Toy' adds swagger to the volatile mix, letting everyone listening in know that these hardcore boys aren't afraid to dance and they expect you to dance with them.

I could go on. Each of the 10 tracks contained on this debut album simply destroys. It's 28 minutes of urgency and excitement, of hardcore fury and rock 'n' roll passion, of belief and conviction and everyone of it's 28 minutes is delivered with such a thrill thats it's hard not to get swept away with everything that is going on.

In Short The Ghost Of A Thousand have delivered a stunning debut. It uses its influences, (Refused, Bars, The Bronx, Gallows, The Hope Con), in a subtle yet mature way to create an totally essential punk rock record. And in 2007 that has become a rare thing indeed.

Info

June Paik are a screamo band from Donauwörth in Germany. They’ve released a selftitled 7” (React With Protest) and a selftitled 12” (React With Protest/Parade of Spectres), the latter of which drew their already dark and intense style more towards epic build ups and heavy droning passages much in the vein of mid-90’s Canadian emo bands such as Union of Uranus and One Eyed God Prophecy, and also a song on each the Emo Apocalypse and Emo Armageddon compilations from React With Protest. The band members are Daniel, Patrick, Ulli and Sebastian.

INFO

Coming from Caen, France, Aussitôt Mort (as soon as dead in french) began playing together in early 2005 : soon after the Apollo Program break up, Antoine, Milouze and Greg decided they wanted to carry on making music together... They teamed up with good friends and great musicians Pierre (also bassplayer in Amanda Woodward) and Cédric (from the experimental-post-rockish local band None-Id). No rules were set, no boundaries erected, just the usual “making music you like with good friends” thing. They first tried to create a new style, “emo-doom”, which could have been called “emoom”, or “doomo”, but they kind of failed. Several months later, some songs have been put together, recorded in le Studio de la Souleuvre, a remote studio in the Normandy countryside. During the process, some played french bowls, a dead mouse was found in a bed, things went pretty good.

Adorno & End of a Year [2008]

Adorno & End of A Year

TRACKLIST

01. Adorno - Life. Love. Don't Need Regret
02. Adorno - Theoretically Driven
03. End of a Year - Michael Ray Richardson
04. End of a Year - Go to Hell, Dickhead

Info

Love this record. A 7 inch split from 2 of the most fresh bands in D.I.Y. punk rock.
End Of A Year come from Albany, NY (USA) and they deliver 2 new songs in the old good fashioned punk rock in the vein of Embrace, Rites Of Spring. You all know the sound. Caustic lyrics and a full musical hard-on on their side. 'Michael Ray Richardson' and the noisy 'Go To Hell, Dickhead' are the songs that appear on this record.
Flip the side and flip yourself. My cousins from Adorno, the great young band from Lisbon, Portugal, on the other side. Vocal melodies ala At The Drive-In. Pounding bass lines. Amazing 2 emotional songs: 'Life. Love. Don't need regret' a wink to Unbroken and 'Theoretically Driven'. Not Theodor. Just Adorno.

Loom - Angler

Photobucket

TRACKLIST

01. Castles
02. Hourglass
03. Sculpt
04. Tracers
05. Yell

INFO

Who:

A Salt Lake City, Utah based post-hardcore quintet who are known for their powerful live performance and slowly building a name for themselves with their debut EP, Angler. The band cites a long list of influences including The Casket Lottery, Bear Vs. Shark, At The Drive-In, and Minus The Bear to name a few.

How Is It?:

Angler is a very refreshing and interesting debut release and the experimentation shown throughout the album shows the band had little fear upon entering the studio. As soon as the track “Castles” begins, you realize one of the key components of the band that sets them apart from their peers: a violinist. I am not talking just accents here and there either, the violin is an integral component of the bands sound and sticks out even amongst the frenzied drumming and dizzying, angular guitar work. Before I actually listened to this record and first discovered there was a violinist, I was a bit skeptical, but it just adds more depth to the album. There is never a dull moment on Angler, as Loom is constantly bombarding the listener with their intricate guitar work, explosive percussion and emotion laden screaming and shouting. Loom occasionally will slow the pace a little allowing the listener a short respite before launching right back into their adrenaline-fueled frenzy. Angler is a great starting point for these Salt Lake City natives, and while there are a few parts that could use fine-tuning, my only chief complaint is that this release was not longer. The band is currently working on a full-length and after the talents I observed on this record, I am eagerly anticipating the results of whatever they release next.

Ampools - puzzle

TRACKLIST

02. Derrière
03. Hier soir le rock'n'roll m'a sauvé la vie
04. L'avant et l'après
05. Convergence
06. Les mains sales
07. Dégoût exquis
08. Vers la fin

INFO

Sometimes you receive a mail from an unknown band with the question if you want to review their album. Rarer is the fact that it’s a French band with French lyrics, a biography in French and the only Ampools related stuff I can find on the internet is in the French language besides a small portion of English on their Myspace.

At school I didn’t succeed very well with French so this review is mostly about the music. The professional sound of Ampools can be categorized in the emorock direction but they combine it with hectic outbursts not unlike At The Drive-In, Refused or even some Botch parts. They succeed quite well because all the songs still have the natural flow and stuck in your head.

Point of discussion is vocalist Antoine Richard. His hysterical way of screaming is something you get used to because after two listener sessions it feels natural and definitely fits in Ampools’ songs so it was a wise decision to put him in front of the Alan Douches’mix.

A professional step for a French band: to go to Alan Douches and when you see the planned gigs on Myspace you know that we're dealing with a band that wants to make huge steps forward. That’s the reason I don’t understand why a press sheet in French language is sent to a foreign webzine. The lyrics and text in the booklet are also in French, a cocky decision but also a strange one if you want to go for European success.

The label asked for only four stars but due to the remarks above I only can go to three and a half.

adorno & syn*error split

TRACKLIST

01.Adorno - Anchors Aweigh
02.Adorno - Time Line
03.Syn*Error - Lowered Expectations

INFO

And the second 7 inch for Adorno available in a few weeks of delay. This split is with the germans from Berlin, Syn*Error.
Adorno follows the line of the other 7 inch, in a more melodic path than their first 12". Nice stuff. The 2 songs are: 'Anchors Aweigh' and 'Timeline'. The end for 'Timeline' is one of the most catchy riffs I remember to having ever listened to.
Syn*Error offers one song called 'Lowered Expectations' on a 400 years style.

Noisy, distorted, melodic, beautiful, emotive sad sounding music. The songs on here are genuine and honest. It's rare when bands like these come along and stick so close to how this style should sound, but both bands have accomplished this sound to perfection.

ALPINIST, a young & promising band from Münster / Germany with their first vinyl output after their amazing demo-tape. They combine the heaviness of FALL OF EFRAFA with the catchiness of modern spanish neo-crust like MADAME GERMEN / EKKAIA.FINISTERRE from Cologne/Germany with six songs full of midtempo d-beat/HC.
Catchy, melancholic melodies pair with brutal M/F – vocals.

INFO

Car vs. Driver began when I was 17 years old. By the time we played our final show, I was 19. This band was the music of my life during a period when people usually experience the greatest amount of freedom, which is what I think of whenever I listen to this music now. There were so many new experiences: living on our own, meeting new people, getting a new perspective on life. Our lifestyle in turn gave us a new perspective on expressing music, and we poured all of our energy and emotion into it. Music that now seems a world away music from a different life. Its hard to remember that everything about being in a band at that time was simply making a 7, buying the cheapest van you could find, and touring the country for the summer. There was no infrastructure to build your music around, which also removed its barriers. Instead of running our band like a corporation, we played peoples living rooms and basements, engaged in kickball tournaments, made record covers out of manila envelopes, slept on top of our van, cooked pasta, and played with some of the most amazing bands in the process. Bands that epitomized the time like Spirit Assembly, Policy of 3, Friction, Current, The Yah Mos, Assfactor 4, Frail, Hoover, Freemasonry, Scout, and Inkwell. The experience we had is something that could never be recreated, and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been a part of that moment in time. Thank you Matt, Steve, and Jonathan for bringing this to me.
