LORDS OF BUKKAKE

LORDS OF BUKKAKE

TRACKLIST

1. BLACK LUNG
2. NO EXCUSES
3. APPLICANTS
4. DEVIL'S RAIN

INFO

Han compartido escenario con grupos como Eight Hands For Khali, High On Fire, Black Cobra, Saviours, Suma, Atomic Bitchwax, Warchetype, Moksha, Iron Batasuna, Positiva, Loan, Rhino, Neila, The Eyes y Monolith.

INFO

Always A Six, Never A Nine is the second album and the follow up to the 2006 self-titled debut from Portland, OR aggro wreckers Black Elk, whose psychotic brand of crushing, noise-rock influenced heaviosity is a return to the unhinged underground rock force of bands like Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Black Flag and Hammerhead. This new album features ten songs of seething weirdness, with the dissonant, crushing riffage, lunging rhythmic push and awesome freaked out, Yow-esque vocals of singer Tom Glose that made their debut a fave among anyone who remembered the days when Amphetamine Reptile ruled the underground rock scene, but with some interesting new elements (bleak, blackened guitar ambience, a smattering of piano, skyreaching guitar harmonies, etc.) that add new shadows to Black Elk's ferocious sound.

geisha - die verbrechen der liebe

TRACKLIST
01. Prelude to Amber Pays the Rent
02. Stop Talking, Let's Fuck
03. A Wilderness, Except by Sight
04. Cocktown and the G Boys
05. Sportsfister
06. Theme From Diana

INFO

This hour-long, six track monolith follows Geisha into a psychedelic black storm, their blown-out and raw rock infused with a bone-rattling recording and covered in a thick sheen of white noise and gritty distortion.

As with their previous album, the spirit of seminal noise rock / sludge rock (think Cherubs, Melvins, My Bloody Valentine’s Isn’t Anything for coordinates) is combined with violent, chaotic noise and tainted with blurred VHS cassette visions and vague allusions to BDSM, and then jammed through an orgone accumulator, forming a ferocious, crushing rock beast that reveals it’s powerful hooks and melodies underneath the churning distorted bass rumble and sludgemetal riffage , blasts of psychedelic drone-noise and corrosive skree, percussive pummel, and deranged singing. The sound is immense, and the first five tracks on Die Verbrechen Der Liebe deliver Geisha’s in-the-red heaviness and hooks in surplus. “Prelude To Amber Pays The Rent”, “A Wilderness, Except By Sight”, “Sportsfister” - every one is a crusher.

But then Geisha pull out the monstrous thirty-minute, thirty-five second closer “Theme From Diana”, and the tone changes completely. This track is a re-working of a “metal percussion” set that Geisha originally performed live several years ago, and it begins as a slowly building fog of voices and effects and shimmering metal that blooms into an expanse of droning, fx-heavy guitar, looping samples, cosmic effects, and improvised percussion. It’s a kind of rumbling industrial dronescape that stretches out forever, until suddenly in the last few minutes the drifting drones and psychedelic guitars and sampled voices suddenly explode in an immolating nuclear blast of overdriven, speaker-annhilating noise and the track immediately, terrifyingly changes shape into a monstrous lumbering noise-metal dirge that bulldozes out of your speakers, whooshing Hawkwind effects swooping overhead, the band knotted together into a white-hot blast of ultra heavy riffage, distortion, and a wall of percussive force. “Diana” is one of the most crushing pieces of music that I have ever heard from Geisha, like some majestic and brutal conglom of Swans, Skullflower, Merzbow, and Burmese forged into a destructive space-metal supernova.

Info

I have a vivid mental snapshot of El Cerdo vocalist Josh Greene holding both arms straight out and staring wild-eyed at the audience of about 25 in a basement in Southeast Portland last month, taking a few deep breaths during an instrumental break before dramatically bringing the microphone back to his mouth to finish pummeling onlookers with a scream influenced by Carcass' Jeff Walker that the 20-year-old has been perfecting since he was 13.

So it comes as a surprise to me when, over lunch at Vita Cafe, El Cerdo guitarist Jayson Smith tells me that all the movement and crowd interaction I saw "isn't something [the band] is doing on purpose." Greene adds, with a hint of disdain on the last word, "When we get up there, we don't have the intention of 'we're gonna put on a show.'" He goes on to explain that his band's practices probably look pretty similar to what I saw at the basement gig. "I just love the music and I feel it," he continues. "And when you feel it, that's what happens."

The first thing you're likely to "feel" at an El Cerdo show is the rhythmic stampede of drummer Nick Pugh's low, rumbling floor tom and bass drum. Having recently switched to a classic single-pedal kick, Pugh now does half the work of the band's complex beats formerly played on a double bass drum with his hands. Smith's description of Pugh as "an octopus" is apt. The heavy 4/4 doom-metal parts of El Cerdo's often seven- or eight-minute songs stand out and feel particularly warm compared with the unpredictable, uncomfortable 5/4 or 7/8 riffs that often pound off of Ben Joner's bass at top speed. There's rarely a recognizable verse-chorus structure; rather, the band writes in a linear fashion, building each of the dozens of changes onto the one before it. The songs themselves are exercises in instrumental complexity, anchored in constantly morphing time signatures.

In fact, the increasing technicality of El Cerdo's instrumentals led Smith, who used to handle vocal duties as well as guitar for the group, to seek out a new throat to front the band. After a short stint with a vocalist who Smith says had trouble making it to practice, they tried out Greene whose old group, the Hordel, performed with El Cerdo and he immediately fit in perfectly. A listener would not guess he's been in the band for only six weeks.

Its stylistic diversity and honest approach make El Cerdo a band that can play a doom festival, as it did this fall in Austin, Texas, or with Northwest power metal gods 3 Inches of Blood, as it will Sunday at Sabala's, and with underground hardcore/thrash up-and-comers Lords and Ed Gein, as it will Monday at Food Hole. Unlike a couple of its favorite local bands, Black Elk and Tragedy, El Cerdo is not really exploring new territory within the metal genre, but the performers' disinterest in artifice, earnest passion and artful synthesis of influences makes the music accessible and infectious.

!Hola! - Slap A Ham Fiesta Grande #1 happend by accident. Little did I know thar this gathering of friends would escalate into a yeraly event, one with a papidly growing attendance where I would constantly mee new people who have travellesd from nearly every stare in the US, from the UK, from Europe, even Japan and Australia. And as the years progress, I´m seeing many of the same faces as well - new friends who become old friends through our common bond of excitement for these band and this style of music.

Many of these bands have fallen under the "power violence" banner but when listening to them all back-to-back it´s obvius that every bands has it´s own unique approach in spite of all labels and categories. Everyone has their own ideas about what is or isn´t "power violence", "emo violence", "hardcore", "grindcore", "noise" of "fastcore". Despite how you want categorize them, these bands represent the pinnacle of extreme music in the 1990´s. The have taken the ideals of ´70´s punk rock and the high-octane urgency of ´80´s hardcore (pioneered by the likes of MDC, who are represented here) and have taken it furher across musical boundaries and limitations than the mainstream will never know.

These songs are all taken from original soundboard tapes and besides a bit of EQing there isn´t much change in the sound quality. While the rough and varing sound quality of this album might not make comparable to "Frapon Comes Alive!", I think the unpolished nature of this collection makes it even more appealing. Rather that being a phony, slick live album, full of averdubs and remixing, this is a raw, stripped-down document that captures the punishjing, uncompromising power and sense of immediacy that this event generates year after year. After all, tha´s what punk rock has always been about.

Info

Opener "Bliss" consists of nothing but heavily distorted lulls that decay into eerie feedback or low-end drones with the occasional bashed bass note/chord, creating an unclear picture that only hints at what this UK unit has to offer. It's only when "Yes, I Do Own Clothes" kicks in with the full band that Pale Horse's brand of absolutely bleak sludge/doom becomes apparent: Nasty distortion, low tuning, pounding slow tempos... the works. And the cackled vocal screams (at times giving way to soft spoken passages) really fit the aesthetic of the music quite nicely, adding a more acerbic bite to the forefront. Imagine Burning Witch meets Dystopia meets Engine Kid with a few more subtly melodic/dissonant flirtations reminiscent of Godflesh's less tangible instrumentation. There's definitely a lot of space here, with hard-hitting percussion, not to mention a very dominant bass presence... in fact, I think there may be two bassists, as most tracks don't seem to have guitars involved. So, for the most part, expect a constant bludgeoning of sinister atmospheres that definitely invoke a lot of disturbed feelings... but the melodic undercurrents definitely lend a nice helping hand and keep things more colorful. Among some of the more notable moments are when "One But Not Metallica" drops in some deep growling vocals against the screams, and "Mustn't Grumble" uses quietly filtered spoken vocals and dry acoustic guitars to create one of the most moving and unique compositions herein. However, closer "Sun Starved Day (Be Patient)" is fucking amazing, bringing in overtly melodic distorted guitars with lots of ringing chords and soft vocals that are faintly sung - definitely the strongest Godflesh allusions herein, and a song so powerful that it practically eclipses the rest of the disc. An impressive finish, for sure. I'm fucking blown away there. The recording is great as well. Nice and thick, very powerful, clear as fucking day, and still retaining a lot of space and natural presence. The drums sound pretty damn good with a great ring to the cymbals, the vocals are right in the heart of the music, the bass guitar(s) are more effective than most bands who use them so dominantly, and the guitars (when present) sound excellent in all forms - the basically untainted acoustics actually among my favorite textures on the entire CD. Visually this looks quite nice. I'm a big fan of both the colors and general style of the photography, and the handwritten lyrics/text provide another nice touch. There's not a booklet, just two two-sided cards with imagery and text. The lyrics are quite curious, ranging from bleak and abstract to rather narrative, but still obscure: "There's five seconds left till never, Hanged by angel's hair you severed, You cannot conceive of forever, You will be built up to never know..." This is a very strong release, but after hearing the mighty "Sun Starved Day (Be Patient)" I must deduce that this is but a mere taste of what this band is capable of. Its finer moments are absolutely masterful, not that the rest isn't great, it is... but I'm telling you, check out this fucking "Sun Starved Day..." track and you'll be fucking floored. Great work. I look forward to hearing more.

Having disbanded just long enough to release a retrospective album called "Southern Discomfort", EHG are back in the saddle with a new full length opus of aneurysm inducing audio sludge called "Confederacy Of Ruined Lives". These gents are to sludge-core what MITB was to power violence, namely; pioneers, godfathers, kingpins, masters, and luminaries. They blaze the trails that others can only hope to follow. This time around the band have incorporated more rockin' and rollin' into their patented sound (not unlike what the band 16 does) but they do so without sacrificing one iota of sickness or twistedness. Somehow they sound even more "southern" than ever. Being steamrolled was never quite so pleasurable.

Nonetheless Monarch have been compared to the legends of this genre (Corrupted, Burning Witch, Sunno, etc.), and record after record, Monarch are proving these comparisons are accurate and true. Monarch deserve a place in the throne by their own values.
