INFO
Duet of terrible children, wire of the punk-rock'n'roll and the noise, One second riot develops a personal musical universe, made sometimes intimate environments, sometimes close to the mass hysteria from where is extirpated a skinned voice, cutting through a path between noise, post-hardcore and industrial music.
INFO Formed in 1990, Deep Turtle was a product of the burgeoning underground music culture of the city of Pori, Finland. Deep Turtle's music fused the energy of hardcore punk, the harmonies of jazz, latin rhythms and experimentalism of progressive rock into a style, which was sometimes dubbed jazzcore or weirdcore by listeners and reviewers. Signature elements of the band's music were an abundance of uncommon time signatures; frantic and abrupt mood changes between soft jazz tones and blistering punk assault; nimble bass work providing a counterpoint to the guitar attack; and often indecipherable lyrics delivered both in Spanish and in English. Some comparisons have been made to bands like Cardiacs (Turtle's 1994 album in fact has a song titled Cardiako) and NoMeansNo.
Deep Turtle broke up in 1996 but reformed again in 2002, only to disband again in 2004 due to drummer Erjossaari having insurmountable difficulties with tinnitus, forcing him to quit.
Deep Turtle made Finnish music history by being the first Finnish band to be invited to do a John Peel session in 1994. Contrary to public belief, mr. Peel was not present at the studio, and he never managed to meet the band in person.

I believe "In the Event of a Blackout" is the first recorded output from Cathedrals, and what an awesome little demo this is. 11 tracks, 13-and-a-half minutes, and that's all she wrote. But, whew, their combination of crushing heaviness and burly His Hero is Gone dissonance with energetic bursts of hyperactive and lightly melodic hardcore makes for a memorable listen that definitely leaves you wanting more. The contrast of such explosive bursts of tactful speed and such a dark, dismal midpaced crunch may seem somewhat odd, but believe me it works (as you'll hear below), and I'm pretty god damn surprised that these cats haven't been scooped up by a label yet. This disc is so damn short I really don't even know what else to say here. This is intense, powerful, open-minded, creative hardcore… and I'm damn sure all for it.

Hoover broke up after returning from a US tour, at a time when they were probably at the height of their popularity. They split leaving a number of new songs unrecorded and many people disappointed. Ex-Hoover members Fred Erskine and Joe McRedmond continued to play together, and joined by Vin Novara, formed a new band: The Crownhate Ruin. They played their first show barely two months after Hoover's demise. The band's music moved into a darker area, with more challenging arrangements and time-signatures, and while they didn't immediately connect with some of the Hoover fans, The Crownhate Ruin began to develop its own following through touring and the release of a single and later a single album on Dischord in early 1996. After Crownhate Ruin, Erskine moved to Chicago and played in many more projects, including June of 44.

Kicking and screaming their way out of sunny Brighton, (UK), The Ghost Of A Thousand lay out their mission statement amidst the opening track's, ('Bored Of Math'), controlled fury; " punk rock needs you again. Generation X is dead" they scream over demented fits of controlled rage. It's one hell of a way to open a record! And what a record it is!.
'Left For Dead' comes next and there isn't a single let up in the ferocious delivery. " I'm sick of seeing the same kids at shows" screams vocalist Tom Lacey, seemingly disillusioned with the scene they are trying to escape, before asking " what is it where looking for?" like a man who knows he may never find the answer. 'Up To You' is a volatile mix of cascading, violent drums and playfully scathing guitars while album highlight 'New Toy' adds swagger to the volatile mix, letting everyone listening in know that these hardcore boys aren't afraid to dance and they expect you to dance with them.
I could go on. Each of the 10 tracks contained on this debut album simply destroys. It's 28 minutes of urgency and excitement, of hardcore fury and rock 'n' roll passion, of belief and conviction and everyone of it's 28 minutes is delivered with such a thrill thats it's hard not to get swept away with everything that is going on.
In Short The Ghost Of A Thousand have delivered a stunning debut. It uses its influences, (Refused, Bars, The Bronx, Gallows, The Hope Con), in a subtle yet mature way to create an totally essential punk rock record. And in 2007 that has become a rare thing indeed.

This release follows of period of relentless touring by Monotonix who are quietly building up a strong following in underground circles. Indeed, by all accounts Monotonix are a band that was made for live stage. I say stage; they seem to play the majority of their gigs in amongst the crowd where the action is. As footage on Youtube et al shows, this can lead to one crazy, sweaty night. For now though, let’s rejoice in this beast of an EP.
Monotonix are a three-piece rock band from Israel that make one hell of a racket. Mums across the land will be screaming for this ‘noise’ to be turned down, but that request is sure to fall on deaf ears as this is best turned up up up. It’s actually quite incredible to think that the only instruments being played here is one guitar and a drum kit. I know there are other bands like The Black Keys and The White Stripes with similar set-ups but when a song like ‘Summers and Autumns’ blows your little cotton socks off, you can’t help but be impressed.
For the most part energetic hard rock is the order of the day but title track ‘Body Language’ is one to shake your ass to. “Dance for me” he sings, “You should be dancing for me” and after a few beers who could refuse? Another pulsating riff from guitarist Yonatan Gat takes control of your body before the track finishes, not in restrained way, but it might as well be a slow dance at a wedding such is the ferocious, infectious nature of the rest of the EP.
Singer Ami Shalev has to take a reluctant backseat throughout. His lyrics, yelps, screams and shouts are often too low in the mix to be made out clearly without repeated listens. Guitarist Gat does produce some great stuff with his meagre six strings, but he can over do it and on a couple of occasions, visions of Jack Black at the beginning of ‘School of Rock’ doing his rock star guitar solo and embarrassing stage dive spring to mind.
I’m not sure if a whole album of Monotonix would be too much or not. This is fun, adrenaline fuelled stuff but you can see it dragging out becoming stale and samey if they don’t mix it up a bit. The Body Language six-track EP goes some way to showing off the enormous energy that this band obviously exude live and one day I hope to see the madness for myself.
