Bellafea call Chapel Hill, North Carolina – a small college town famed mostly for its booming, influential 90s indie rock scene – home. The rich, independent music history and their subsequent Southern upbringing play obvious roles in structuring their individuality. Bellafea teems with the punk spirit of local townies Superchunk, while the trialing dissonance of Polvo shine through in their string parts. There is an earnest aggression in their music, perhaps channeled from their struggles with the vastly conservative Southeastern United States – the patriarchal, Bible-belt countryside where they grew up. There is resistance, and there is also a secular nod to their heritage and its inevitable and inspiring impact on their songwriting.
Cavalcade could be Bellafea’s “call to arms”. Recorded over two years during multiple sessions with Chapel Hill engineers Brian Paulson and Nick Petersen, focused on the ideas of plurality and layers, friends and enemies, dedication and rejection, decoding the feeling of fight. Bellafea’s urgency and battle cry is apparent; well-known for their captivating sold-out hometown performances, they have gained the loyalty of local musicians/friends John Darnielle (Mountain Goats), Dave Laney (Milemarker), Ben Davis (Sleepytime Trio, Bats & Mice), Daniel Hart (Polyphonic Spree, St. Vincent, John Vanderslice), Eric Moe (Zegota) who all – along with a choir of friends – lend a hand on their debut full-length.

Action Beat are an improv noise/no-wave band which is often made up of musicians who are available to play the gig on any particular date. We sound quite like early sonic youth, Glenn Branca, Swans and Rhys Chatham. We normally have at least 4 guitarists, a bassist and between 1 and 4 drummers.

Somebody once said: "Chicks up front!"...these ladies pushed even forward by putting "these chicks" on the stage. I've never been that much into "riot grrrls" and I've never supported female bands for the mere fact they were women, I think this kind of behavior is cheesy and also deeply discriminating underneath. After this unwanted and useless lesson of "hows and whys" (mercy upon me please!), let's talk about the real matter of this recording, the music. That's noise a la Amphetamine Reptile, Php or early Touch and Go, I'm not afraid to say the trio is in to make your ears bleed, a really good thing if you play music like that. The production is great (Fabio Magistrali sometimes is simply excellent), everything is hard as a band like that should be and they really know how to play. As I've already said "Greeting from S.sg" is a "de-ja vu" of noise music in the likes of Janitor Joe, Unsane, early Jesus Lizard, Hammerhead, Helmet and Big Black, although it may sound old fashioned that's the special of the day. "Greeting" is as "delicate" as a truck-driver could be, look at the shit they put on the front cover, isn't it lovely?!. I don't know if you care about their sexual gender, I imagine some people will talk about it, I'm sorry I did it too much myself. This' hard "Noise" well done and arranged in the way they did it back in the nineties.

Given his endless roster of side projects in addition to his main gig, Sebadoh, it would seem Lou Barlow just can't get enough of himself. But as the king of lo-fi, it's Lou's job to be a compulsive releaser of material. In committing so much to tape, Barlow gives us an intimate view of a songwriter in all his moods and various states of polish. Barlow appears on 9 of 13 cuts on the soundtrack of the much-discussed film Kids, mainly as part of a duo with John Davis called Folk Implosion. While there's a spare Sebadoh oldie ("Spoiled") and an angry punk exorcism from the four-man Deluxx Folk Implosion ("Daddy Never Understood"), mostly we hear Barlow in mellow dance mode with the groove-based Implosion. Over trancelike mechanical beats and synth effects that verge on ambient at times, Barlow delivers vocals in as plain and funky a style as a nerdy white boy can. It's a shame that songs like "Natural One" and "Wet Stuff" barely appear in the film; they create a perfect backdrop for Kids' confused adolescents.

Young and Restless were drawn together in Canberra in April 2005. Ask the five members of the band what magnetised them and somewhere in the sprawling explanation there’d inevitably be reference to noise and energy. Because noise and energy are central to everything about Young and Restless.
Guitarists Ash Pegram and Mark Falkland play with a hardcore intensity that struggles to be harnessed to the band’s blink and you’ll miss ‘em pop songs. Teenage bass player Ross Paxman makes it more than evident that he spent part of his youth growing up in Seattle and in tandem with drummer Nugie Utomo plays with a ferocity intent on waking the entire neighbourhood. And out front singer Karina Utomo effortlessly and unintentionally smashes every stereotype you may still be unconsciously clinging on to. This is a woman with something to say and a voice to say it with.
Now calling Melbourne home (except for Nugie who is still in Canberra for studies), Young and Restless were thrust into the spotlight late last year when they won Triple J's Unearthed competition, which resulted in them performing at Homebake in Sydney. Six months on and the band has been ripping up stages across the country with the likes of Erase Errata, Cansei De Ser Sexy and Love Is All.
Set for release mid-July, the album is completely self-funded and was recorded by Tom Larkin of Shihad, at his studio in Melbourne earlier this year. Despite several tracks having already sneakily, blasted out on radio (I Pointed At You and You Burst Into Flames, Satan, Dirty Kicks) the album will be the first official release for Young and Restless and Satan and Dirty Kicks have now been remade, remodelled and cranked for even more high energy action.
Vocal collaborators on the album include Peter Saladino (Brisk) and Tom Lyngcoln (The Nation Blue).

Nine Days Wonder are heavily influenced by the loud and thundering post-punk that swarms music in the United States. No doubt this sound is somewhat less prevalent in the group's hometown of Tokyo, Japan. The quartet cites such bands as Shotmaker, Unwound, and The Jesus Lizard as pivotal influences to their current sound, and it shows. But just as there's quite a bit of geographic distance between this band and their influences, musically lots has changed in the translation, making them quite enjoyable and unique.
On their debut album, Scenery Is In Disguise There, driving, layered, and melodic rock suddenly gives way to pounding wallops by the rhythm section and shrieking vocals. And then you might barely recognize the band if you're listening to their split CDEP with San Diego's No Knife. There, the group takes a more melodic and artistic approach with cleaner guitars and the addition of keyboards high in the mix which dictate much of the music's mood. The intricities are still important, but aggression has given way to more tuneful expression. Nine Days Wonder are a much different take on many interesting things happening mostly in the United States, and they're definitely worth a listen.
