06. Lyrics Are Never More Important Than The Music

INFO

"Oh, good," you're saying to yourself. "Weird instrumental rock from the Czech Republic." Even better (sigh), it's music that its makers call "compost rock," which turns out to be a pretty apt term: imagine a large pile of musical influences that includes everything from electronica to psychedelia to hardcore to prog, and that slowly collapses in on itself, producing a warm, fragrant, unified whole. Frankly, it's probably a good thing that this music is instrumental, since it's hard to imagine what kinds of words or sung melodies could go along felicitously with the strange, faintly dubwise "Le Grand Wazoo" or with "Sixplusone," which features synthesized marimba and ends up sounding like a cross between Dinosaur Jr. and Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. "Ichtriol" doesn't go much of anywhere and doesn't offer much fun along the way, but "Rhodamine" cooks nicely and "Hymen" features both a fun 5/4 time signature and spooky, Pere Ubu-flavored synthesizer noises -- and if there's one thing today's world could use more of, it's spooky, Pere Ubu-flavored synthesizer noises (though whether it needs more songs titled "Hymen" is open to debate). Not bad at all.

INFO
If music were a sport where statistics were kept, this Japanese group's debut would lead the league in "longest album name over shortest band name" ratio. I can't help but find it odd that an album with such a strange and verbose title would consist entirely of instrumental music, but that's exactly what this is. te's (yes, the band's name is lowercase) atmospheric web of sound could be considered post-rock and maybe even math-rock, but they play it with such an unbridled energy and enthusiasm that they transcend the egg-headed (aka "boring") tendencies that come with such tags; instead coming off something like Mogwai covering Jawbox (or perhaps it's the other way around). While certainly not for all tastes, I think those with a penchant for challenging instrumental rock will dig this.

MIZTURA, bases it elegance on the combination of epic constructions dilated with skilful playing, a jazzy wind section and a voice that, when employed, flows parsimoniously among the rest of the instruments: guitar, bass, drums and trumpet. The electric crescendos and sharpened guitar riffs are two hints at the masterful universe of near-dark musicals that this young band inhabits.

Parhelia - Oceans Apart (EP)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

TRACKLIST

01. Lights In The Distance
02. Hindsight
03. Oceans Apart
04. Summer Fades
05. Storm Warning

INFO

Post rock/metal is a label despised by some who can't handle the "post" prefix of it. Putting sociological and/or metaphysical discussions aside for a second, I never really understood it either but it seems to me a label as fitting as any to lump together all the bands that sound like Neurosis, Isis or Pelican. For me, however, most post rock/metal is actually very progressive and Irish act Parhelia certainly is no exception.

Given the characteristic of their sound, along with the fact that there's no vocals at all, it's inevitable to draw heavy comparisons to Pelican. They really sound alike but there's something else in Parhelia's music that makes me forgive that strong resemblance, maybe a sense of going places, a certain feeling of epic their music instills. "Oceans Apart" clocks in at a mere 30:58 and at first I had a hard time believing this was self-produced and that we're talking about an unsigned band. Every instrument is perfectly clear in the mix and there's a warmness that really enhances the dreamlike texture of these songs. This is band that comes across as ultra cohesive, everyone sounding like they're on the very same page.

And speaking of the songs, there's no use in talking about each one separately. In fact, I'd argue there's no use in listening to any isolated track, as "Oceans Apart" blends all five cuts so well that the half hour is over before you know it. The band's choice of artwork - of which you can only get a glimpse from the above cover image, as it's much more intricate than just the cover - gives the clue to what's inside: a crimson sunset in some faraway idyllic place between rocks, trees and water. It's just thirty minutes, but just hit play again when it's over, it will expose something different every time around.

This is merely Parhelia's debut album, after 2006's "First Light". "Oceans Apart" is already, hands down, one of the best post rock/metal albums I've heard in a long time and if they can manage to stray a little from the obvious Pelican resemblance while maintaining this spirit in their music, they certainly have the potential to be a future reference in this genre.

8. W.S. Burns's Sweater
9. Four Sores & Seven Beers Ago Part III
10. Untitled
11. Coax the Goat

Info

The Snake Trap is a really cool instrumental rock band. The name describes their long convoluting, extremely pumping songs perfectly! I can't help but smile at their whacky and maybe silly song titles like "Redheaded Manual Festival", "Four Sores And Seven Beers Ago" (parts I, II and III) and "Untitled". Though I'd rather not label them as this genre or that, I'd suggest this band to people who are into post-rock/stoner-rock, especially bands like Pelican and Isis and to anyone who likes long pointless jams. You'd do good to check them out. I can't find even one decent review of their 2006 album "At Home in a Hostile World". They don't even seem to have a homepage! How lazy can a band get? So listen to these guys and spread the word. Their songs also have a loaded bass sound which can crush you to pulp, so go fucking get hold of the bloody album.

Info

MICROFILM is a french band created in 2003 by musicians coming from various musical backgrounds and bands such as Gum, Seven Hate and Myra Lee.

The result of their meeting is an instrumental music including movie dialogues’ samples and is often described as Post Rock in the vein of Mogwai, Explosions in the sky, From monuments to masses…

But the guys never planned to play such or another music style since they only listen to their feelings and music is their way to express their emotions. Concerning their influences it’s pretty wide: Sonic Youth, Jawbox, Foxy Brown, My Bloody Valentine, The Neptunes, Queens Of The Stone Age, Bernard Hermann, Trs 80, Black Sabbath, Envy……

And the musicians of MICROFILM were rather glad to play with bands such as Playdoh, Explosions in the sky, M83, Jeffrey Lewis, Sayag Jazz Machine, Millionaire, The Black Heart Procession, Dalek, Subtitle, Houston Swing Engine…in France, Switzerland and Spain. The addition of moving pictures sampled from movies and then graphically re-done creates a real link between the music and the dialogues on stage.

Cyril Blandino called it quits with Superstatic Revolution back in 2001and remained on the US ground with the will to form a band capable of quenching his thirst to 'do something more personal' in music and to receive his talentuous guitar work. After jumping from bands to bands he finally joined the Cleveland-based band And Say We Did in 2004. While he took the bass duties in Superstatic Revolution, he is back as guitar player in this new project this new position will give him the room that he always looked forward to compose himself surrounded by musicians always breaking boundaries. The Cleveland rock clubs' walls won't never forget the sweat and big audience gathered each time the band plays. 'Final demonstration' saw the light of day in the summer of 2005. It is composed of instrumental tracks, very rock-oriented and developing structures following each other, crossing each other, with no frequent turning back to riffs. In some ways, this is the compilation of all titles the band ever created before they disbanded marking this way the end of a period meanwhile it is the starting point to a new one because both Cyril and Billy (bass) remained together to start Endagenda with the help of a new drummer. Endagenda is a brand new creature emerging from both major heads and capable of welcoming their experimentations.
