Info

This crushing Swedish act features former members of Within Reach, 59 Times the Pain, and Nine. I don't know that much about their previous bands, but this is some excellent metallic hardcore with tons of plodding chord progressions, gruff vocal yells, slight tinges of melody and dissonance, and plenty of rhythmic destruction. There's a droning sort of quality to the tracks to some degree, but all of the songs are succinct so that dynamic doesn't get too over the top. At times "Cathode Ray Conspiracy" throws out some excellent vocal yells over simply bass and drums, with layers of guitars and spoken vocals joining in towards the end for a killer finale. "Some Assembly Required" is longer and slightly more melodic to some degree, but the vocals drive the composition, as they do with "Sweet Failure", though some pounding percussion and discordant lead lines also create a lot of the atmosphere. The production is pretty good. I love the drum tones. They're totally dense and accentuate the forceful nature of the drumming. The bass sounds great but tends to get lost behind the layers of guitars and vocals, but it still sounds solid. The guitars are oddly not really all that distorted, they're heavy, but possess a dry clarity and texture that lets the rhythm section take care of a lot of the low-end throb. The vocals sound fucking perfect... I really love the vocals, actually. For straight shouting this is as good as it gets. The layout is minimal but I dig it. It's all done in black, white, and red, and there's not much text on the outer sleeve. The cover shows the great looking band logo over an image of a cityscape with a guy in a skimask in the background, and the back has a rotting skeleton in the dirt. The center spread has an even larger view of the slick logo with recording information, the tracklist, and the band lineup. Nothing more. I would highly recommend this for fans of Neurosis, Isis, Breach, and the like. This is definitely not at all what I would call a copycat of such styles, as it's notably more stripped down and in your face on certain levels, but all the same... great work. I'd love to hear a full-length.
