Fastcore, grindcore, power violence, hardcore all the same to me and definitely all the same to this Dutch hardcore bands. Mash all those styles into one battering ram piece of orange wax and you have 21 mallets to the head, bathed in down-tuned mud. The bass sounds like tanks rolling into town, he guitars echo fighter jets dropping their wares on the population below. Two vocalists battle it out for Throat-Coat supremacy, with one a deep grindcore growler and the other sounding like Pat Dubar of all things. This really reminds me of insuld sometimes, but where that band reveled in bitter humor. Fubar portray a world strangled by fear and hypnotized by war.

Info

The new french noise generation, walking on post rock 'n roll steps, finds its breeding ground on the notes of Membrane. Emerging from the pop-rock underground in 2000, Membrane, previously called Blindfold, rapidly grew up with noise bands, sharing the stage with Sleeppers, Tantrum, Doppler, etc and featured on the much sought after festivals Les Eurockéennes 2004 and Le Printempsde Bourges 2005 bills thanks to the quality and mouth-to-ear reviews on their first 'Stage box' cdep and their brand new debut cd 'Utility of useless things', captured by none-the-less than Serge Morattel adn mastered by Alan Douches. Membrane, given to live reviewers, is a power act. Seeing them live is a journey, a powerful and delightful sensation into the vaults of emotion, ambition and heavyness. Hastily labelled as a music close to Breach and Unsane, Membrane was at this time at the crossing point of cult 90's french bands Basement and Portobello Bones tending to more modern and loud bands such as Neurosis and this is right; Breach. 'Membrane take the noisy, blown, spittle-drooling-from-the-chin pigfuck of noise rock's heydey, mix in some earthshaking dirge metal a la Neurosis, and strap it to the back of a muscular post-hardcore assault that's similiar to the metallic attitude Jawbox copped after they toured with Helmet way back when.' Crucial blast Behind this down-to-earth emotion that urges from their shows, Membrane is priorily a power trio who focuses on a firm composition with memorable and catchy riffs. 'Utility' had a massive guitar sound despite the fact one-take only was prefered by the band. Plus, merely no effect was added to the mix, which somewhat shows how the band put interest into rendering the most honest and primitive version of the tracks. "The six tracks on UTILITY OF USELESS THINGS are a testament to heavy music, with lots of breakdowns; searing and chugging guitar work." Skratch magazine Also, they had a short episode trying an extra member on guitar. That was only as short as unefficient which means obviously that the band had to remain a trio forever. But where do they go from here ? Well 2 years later, some tours behind, the highly anticipated follow-up to 'Utility' is called 'A story of blood and violence' and presents 7 new tunes and a cover of Unsane, of course ! This time, they chose Niko of Kill The Thrill to record the new cd. 'Utility' was massive but 'A story' promises to be 100 more massive. 'A story of blood nad violence' is set to be out in May 2007 on Basement Apes Industries.

Insula - A Blood Red Sky

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

01. A Ceribelli Inferior Ant [1:48]
02. Cathode Ray Conspiracy [3:34]
03. Sharing Needles [3:22]
04. Some Assembly Required [4:33]
05. Sweet Failure [4:04]

Info

This crushing Swedish act features former members of Within Reach, 59 Times the Pain, and Nine. I don't know that much about their previous bands, but this is some excellent metallic hardcore with tons of plodding chord progressions, gruff vocal yells, slight tinges of melody and dissonance, and plenty of rhythmic destruction. There's a droning sort of quality to the tracks to some degree, but all of the songs are succinct so that dynamic doesn't get too over the top. At times "Cathode Ray Conspiracy" throws out some excellent vocal yells over simply bass and drums, with layers of guitars and spoken vocals joining in towards the end for a killer finale. "Some Assembly Required" is longer and slightly more melodic to some degree, but the vocals drive the composition, as they do with "Sweet Failure", though some pounding percussion and discordant lead lines also create a lot of the atmosphere. The production is pretty good. I love the drum tones. They're totally dense and accentuate the forceful nature of the drumming. The bass sounds great but tends to get lost behind the layers of guitars and vocals, but it still sounds solid. The guitars are oddly not really all that distorted, they're heavy, but possess a dry clarity and texture that lets the rhythm section take care of a lot of the low-end throb. The vocals sound fucking perfect... I really love the vocals, actually. For straight shouting this is as good as it gets. The layout is minimal but I dig it. It's all done in black, white, and red, and there's not much text on the outer sleeve. The cover shows the great looking band logo over an image of a cityscape with a guy in a skimask in the background, and the back has a rotting skeleton in the dirt. The center spread has an even larger view of the slick logo with recording information, the tracklist, and the band lineup. Nothing more. I would highly recommend this for fans of Neurosis, Isis, Breach, and the like. This is definitely not at all what I would call a copycat of such styles, as it's notably more stripped down and in your face on certain levels, but all the same... great work. I'd love to hear a full-length.

10. Vassal Of The Phallus Crown
11. I'm A Fucking Ice Giant

Info

This album picks up right where "Harshing Your Mellow" left off. As with any band, the years have been good to Akimbo, giving them more experience, better production value, and slightly new direction of their sound.

That being said, this is an entire album of Face Eaters. If you're unfamiliar with my reviewing style, let me tell you what a Face Eater is. A Face Eater is when you listen to a song that is so amazingly good (and usually tied into hardcore in some way) and you just have to say "Sweet Christ, that song just ate my face." Seriously. The entire album.

To describe their sound, I'd have to say: imagine thirty-thousand Rick James bitch slaps. Now imagine how those would feel if they were delivered audibly through eleven tracks with names like "Bitten From The Thigh of Zeus" and "I'm a Fucking Ice Giant." That's right, not only do they tear shit up, but they have a God complex as well.

On a more serious note for those who are going to get all pissy and whine like, "But what do they actually sound like? You just poured off mindless dribble! This is a bad review!" What makes this band distinctive is it's use of time signatures and complete use of instruments. The bass plays the most insane riffs and chords, which are complemented by the guitar screeching out riffs and chords at the same time, which is all tied together by the some of the heaviest drumming, full of crash cymbals, fills, and syncopated hi-hats and rides. The vocals are guttural and growling without being all crappy and tough guy like every band out there with either "death" or "bleeding" in their name. In way of production value, it's a bit gritty, but you can tell it's on purpose. What you get from this record is most likely what you'll hear at the live show. No overproduction, and no fucking Auto-Tune. This shit is the real deal. Lyrically, they are incomparable to any other hardcore band out there. "Trust the fortress walls floating above the beast/watch the moon rolling over white/dancing and singing, we dissipate into the waves..." Or maybe try "Rain. Thunder. Falling from the heavens terror in the sky. This day all gods die." "You'll cut these cells/but I'll grow them back and disappear/So bring your blade, sadistic witch/Do your worst. Just like Delilah in my dreams." This group just can't seem to break itself away from biblical and mythological references. And that's sweet.

Interwoven into everyone of these songs is a barrage of tempo and time signature changes, as well as the most balls-to-the wall 4/4 that you'll ever hear. What is missing from this record are the sound clips that tie together the tracks that "Harshing Your Mellow" had, but it doesn't need them. Their song writing has progressed beyond the need for any sort of gimmick to help the album tie itself together. Key moments on this record are the song "Harpoon," which begins with just a slow bass riff, and then softly, as if they're being executed in the room next door, you hear the most vocal chord shredding screams. Badass. Also, in the end of "Kiss the Sun," out of nowhere it breaks down with the bass playing a really high riff while the guitar plays the lower harmonic to it. Classic.

This album brought Akimbo into favorite band status. If you liked "Harshing Your Mellow" at all, you'll love Elephantine. Permanently cemented in my top ten of all time.

Info

It is not easy to classify Soziedad Alkoholika within a specific style of music. Trash, Hardcore, Metal, Punk... The only sure thing is that its foundation has always been in its strength and speed, displaying a wide and varied selection of influences based on their particular style as is shown in their arrangements. With regard to their text, they have always been faithful to the music. Corrosive and explicit lyrics, full of social commitment and direct protest, have been one of its main characteristics. This irreverant attitude has brought with it certain problems with the legal system, instigated by the most conservative sectors of the Spanish State.

Nobody has been left indifferent since they formed the group. After their massive hit with their first demo "Intoxikaziòn Etìlica" where they combine strength and speed, unusual for those times, it was in 1991 with their first LP "Soziedad Alkoholika"that they were able to surprise the specialists in their field and at the same time appeal to a wide variety of followers from all areas of heavy music. Their first official piece of work broke barriers which many had thought to be insuperable among such styles so defined as Punk and Metal, which was a salutary shock for the scene at the time. Needless to say, their first LP instantly became a crossover classic.

Having disbanded just long enough to release a retrospective album called "Southern Discomfort", EHG are back in the saddle with a new full length opus of aneurysm inducing audio sludge called "Confederacy Of Ruined Lives". These gents are to sludge-core what MITB was to power violence, namely; pioneers, godfathers, kingpins, masters, and luminaries. They blaze the trails that others can only hope to follow. This time around the band have incorporated more rockin' and rollin' into their patented sound (not unlike what the band 16 does) but they do so without sacrificing one iota of sickness or twistedness. Somehow they sound even more "southern" than ever. Being steamrolled was never quite so pleasurable.

Info

Back in the early '90s Johan and Ola used to hang out, drinking a lot of cheap wine while they were listening to old Mob 47 tapes and Disharge records (well, mostly the a-side on "Why" since Ola had glued it to his recordplate during a drinking session...) The Boys decided that it was time they did something on their own, so they wrote a few songs and formed Massgrav. They started to rehearse with a spanish drummerboy called Erlando and it resulted in the now classic rehearsaltape "Spräckt skita i pikéten", (thats "Cracked ass in the copcar" to you english readers) containing 8 blistering and ass kicking HC songs on a recording that nowadays only can be found as a rare item on Ebay, if you are lucky! "Spräckt skita i Pikéten" went down really well in the underground scene and Massgrav did some drunk, chaotic and successful touring, mostly in the Eastern part of Europe - where they were hailed as kings. Then came the first major setback for Massgrav. Erlando, the drummer, had some serious problems with alcohol and drugs and just couldn't keep up with the pace in the songs since he was high all the time... So, J&O had to sack the sucker and they decided to put Massgrav on ice for a while (4 years!!) when they started the search for a new drummer... And man did they find him!? In the year of 2001 J&O where down in Gothenburg to participate in the anti-EU riots and there they found Conny Slägga, an angry anarchist who'd hated everything and everyone and could play the drums faster than you could imagine. J&O forced him to join Massgrav, and the band was back on the track! In February 2002 Massgrav entered a studio in Stockholm with the legendary punk-producer T. Birnik. The result? "Fast i Skiten" (Stuck in the shit) 7 new tracks of pissed off Scandi HC-thrash with no mercy. Unfortunately, the mixing got delayed due to financial problems. So Massgrav had to do the already booked Polish spring-tour without the new record. A big disappointment to all the polish crust-fans who'd been saving all their money to be able to buy this long awaited piece. (Polish boys and girls: We are really sorry for this and we will make it up to you. You'll be able to buy "Fast i skiten" through Pjotr Pjiinks in Gdansk. He'll probably have the records in early december) Anyway, here we are (october 2002), we've finally got some cash so we can pay for the mixing of the "Fast i skiten" record, so - Ladies and Gents you better get ready for the big takeover.

UPDATE 2003-04-01. Big ass news in the camp. Massgrav and Conny Slägga have parted ways due to personal differences, any questions to this statement will be answered with "no comments". We are also glad to welcome Mattias "Indy" Pettersson as our new permanent drummer. We must say that this time it feels like we've found the ultimate Massgrav-lineup. Hear what the man himself has to say about all this:

"This is Indy speaking: I´m very proud to say that I`ve joined Massgrav. This with full fuckin` force. My commitment and dedication is 110% and I`m very excited about the future of the band. I have already rehearsed on a couple of new songs and they fuckin` blew me away. Really awesome. It feels great to drum with the band and I`m looking forward to see you on the road so what I wanna say is: EAT SHIT, YOU FAT FUCKS!!!!!" /Mattias"

Ok. stay tuned for more shit.

American Heritage may be the name of that 50-pound dictionary on your bookcase, but it's also the name of a collective of musicians from Chicago whose latest release encompasses all of the band's offerings and incarnations. On the 10-track endeavor, the metallic overtones and weighty rhythms are staggered among rollicking percussion and a warped sense of hardcore grit. Dissonant, aggressive, and abrasive, this constantly shifting array of noiseniks combine Helmet, Unsane, Bloodlet, and Mastodon's aural assault into one bad ass concoction. Be prepared to be pummeled.

Info

When your ears take a trip down to good ol' NOLA, what usually pops into your head? KATRINA! Syke... sludge of course, or most things generally stoney, drug addled, bar fighting, raw and stench filled. Containing members of everybody's favorite hatred-spewing band Eyehategod, Hawg Jaw is one of those bands that you listen to and know that the band members were genetically designed to play their given style of music. This isn't some Hydrahead post-[insert genre] / Isis-wannabe sorta-sludge band; Hawg Jaw is 100% pure swampy jams and misanthropy.

Equal parts hardcore and stoner metal, as the word sludge rightly means, Hawg Jaw belts out Southern-fried riffs and generally whiskey-gargling throatwork.

Hawg Jaw seems equally influenced by Discharge and Black Flag as they are Vitus and Melvins, if not more. Drummer Matt Williams is really the standout member of the band in my opinion, being a total firecracker behind the kit and also keeping the album from having a consistent pace. The vocals are about as overdriven as the guitars, which is pretty much how they should be on an album like this. Pass this one over if you like clean production.

If you like Eyehategod and always thought they could pick up the pace, Hawg Jaw is your band. If you like your hardcore punk mixed with Buzzov*en and pissed to the max, even better. Certainly not a groundbreaking album, but it's a suitable accompaniment to a 40 in your kitchen waiting to be emptied after a nasty day at work.

Info

Hot damn, I knew this thing was gonna kill as soon as seven-minute opener "The Only Cure, the Only Remedy" kicked off with pristine acoustic guitars and twisted lead melodies over distant vocal snarls, and sure enough, a minute later the band plows straight into some speedy and extremely energetic black metal. But that's only the beginning! I've actually read a lot about this band, be it the fact that their lineup contains members of Impaled, Hammers of Misfortune, and Hickey; that their female vocalists are among the best out there; or that their songwriting is super intense and definitely pushes for something more out of the genre. And I have to say, they're worth all the hype and then some... and they actually deserve way more attention than they're getting. The impressive vocals range from ripping screams and roaring snarls to a monotone form of singing, and while black metal may be the backbone of a lot of the music, there's way more happening with this stuff. From tight tremolo picking and ragingly fast power chords to twisted discordant arpeggios or sinister clean passages there's a lot of wrenchingly emotional feeling to everything that's happening on this one. The songwriting is a very effective blend as well, both with all of these varied playing styles as well as the sense of flow and arrangement. There's a lot of subtle layering involved that adds intrigue to both the riffing and the vocal arrangements, and the drummer's got a real knack for cutting loose with sweet fills and powerful changeups when the structures permit. Just check out the dissonant midpaced riffing and brooding singing that makes up "Let Thirst the Soil" for an example of what the band has to offer when they ease back on the speed and give things a little more breathing room; whereas the cold and repetitious "One-Thousand Wolves" has a significant air of classic Norwegian black metal to it without coming off as a throwback by any means. These types of riffs appear elsewhere too, most notably in the awesome "Why Conquer?", another seven-and-a-half-minute epic with numerous dynamic shifts and interplay between clean and distorted guitar lines. "Time Wounds All Heels" perfectly exemplifies the kind of ominous atmospheres that the band conjures up with layered vocal work and pulsing rhythms that hone right in on melodic dissonance and fluid transitions between tempo changes and clean/distorted playing; but it's slower compositions like the persistent and gloomy "Aging Ghost" that maximize the effectiveness of such punishing characteristics and make for more of an emotional impact (this one's quite possibly my favorite herein, though it's a tough call... "The Only Cure, the Only Remedy" is damn vicious in its own right). Though, for those who like it fast, fear not: There's always the relentless onslaught of shorter tracks like the furious "In the Greenest Maze", blistering blastbeats and all! The production is pretty slick as well, making nice use of dirty textures that don't particularly come off as raw, but also don't obscure the fact that the performances are very tightly controlled. The acoustic guitars all sound fucking beautiful, with the distortion falling between densely crunchy heaviness and a sheen of eerie distance. The only item I'd like to hear change would be the bass, as I'm really not making out much of the bass performance at all. But the drums are clear and have a dryly natural presence, the vocals are excellently placed amidst the instrumentation, etc. They could probably stand for a faint bit more clarity in there since some of the drum work can overshadow the guitar playing, but all in all it's an efficient sound for the aesthetic of their delivery. The layout looks good to me and uses faint hints of metallic silver ink with lots of cool imagery of uniquely arranged handwritten lyrics on everything from walls and prescription pads to birthday cakes. And, as expected, the lyrics ain't pretty: "When you paint this town red, why not do it from your veins? Let torrential tears of silver salt wash away the stains, Be not concerned with petty things like pain, or shame, or fear, Let these gutters swallow secrets your simple self held dear, Free the buried stones..." Man, this is just a pounding release that's chock full of admirably powerful riffs and well composed songs that definitely leave a mark. Very much recommended, and I'm going to be heavily interested in hearing their next record, because I honestly bet they're gonna do major damage, because they've got the potential to eclipse this one... and that kind of result could be a serious contender out there. Look into this fucker for sure, there's not one weak track on this thing. Great work

Info

As life drained away from hardcore, with more and more bands losing heart and trying to tailor their music to the mainstream and capitalize off its popularity, Cherem was a breath of fresh air for those that still cared. Formed in the fall of 2000, Cherem was a direct response to the lack of heart in a scene that had grown stagnant, and by early 2001 they had recorded their first four-song demo entitled "As The Truth Unfolds."

As drastic changes were occurring as a result of their dedication, the band knew that the message had to be taken further. One of the few bands left with an actual message, as well as being one of the only remaining Vegan Straightedge bands in the U.S., Cherem knew that they had a lot to offer the hardcore scene.

In 2003, Cherem self-released their first EP "In the Land of the Dead." Selling out of two limited pressings in a short period and touring the west, Cherem began catching national attention and were asked to contribute to a number of projects including a compilation put out by Resolve Records and a 7-inch, "In God We Trust," by Devolution Records. The 7", collaborating with Hip-Hop artist Foeknawledge, paved the way for another song on Foek’s own full length.

Cherem were invited to play the Total Liberation Festival, a two-day event, in Erie, PA in January 2004 with the likes of Freya and Italy’s own Purification. Their live show and dedication got the attention of New Eden Records, who offered to release the EP with new songs and a new mastering. Following it’s wide release in the summer of 2004, a number of tours through the west coast followed in its support.

Over the next year, the band remained busy touring as much as possible and writing music for a follow-up entitled “WE ARE THE REVOLUTION.” The album, recorded in the fall of 2005 by Andy Patterson and mixed by Alan Douches of West West Side, contains the band’s best songwriting to date while still holding true to the message they began with so long ago.

While they continue to impress and expand their fan base, Cherem remains hard at work and are honored to share the stage with some of the biggest bands in hardcore today including Bleeding Through, Purification, Undying, From Autumn to Ashes, xDEATHSTARx, Remembering Never, Freya, A18, Most Precious Blood, God Forbid, Wings of Scarlet, Evergreen Terrace, The Chariot, Rag Men, The Judas Cradle, Love is Red, Shattered Realm, On Broken Wings, The Warriors, and many more.

Cherem is currently working on putting together a spring-time tour in support of their new record, with more touring plans in store for the coming year.

7. Forest Eyes
8. Thieves in the Palace
9. Sometimes
10. A New Hope

Info

You receive a fancy letter in the mail. An invitation to a cocktail party. A few days later you find yourself poolside with a colorful, but not too colorful, drink in your hand. A bit too drunk, involved in a bit too deep conversation about David Lynch..s new movie; a documentary about the dark December days around a concert in Berlin, featuring a super group made up by Vangelis, Roy Orbison, Kate Bush and Jim O'Rourke..

Logh's fourth record sounds somewhat like that. If one wants it to.

Since the people of Logh are so bullheaded and since they always have to do everything the other way around and since their last record was recorded in one day, they decided this time to record for way too long. Someone called it the longest indie recording in world history. Perhaps you shouldn't take that for a fact, but it really did take a long, long time.

There wasn't really supposed to be any new Logh record within a foreseeable future but then, in January 2006, the band headed out on their umpteenth European tour. A tour which proved to be so much fun and so successful that a spark was lit. Following that, music was being written and recorded non-stop until the record, in November, finally was done.

The file sizes of the sessions in Pro Tools had reached dizzying heights after months of attempts of finding something that no one knew what it looked like. When the time came for Pelle Gunnerfeldt to mix the record, he probably laughed, or cried, to himself when he opened the files and saw the mess. Somehow though, he managed to straighten it out with the help from the iconic image of Mark Knopfler projected in 3D above the mixing console.

What you yourself will find in the record probably depends a bit on what you bring to it. But like the tale of Snake Plissken in Escape from New York, this one also tells the story of someone trying to get out and away from a dark, threatening and chaotic existence. But maybe wearing a slightly wider, self-ironic smile. And definitely holding a much cooler drink.

Dead men tell no tales [14:09]
Somewhere below the devil is laughing [36:41]
Les lumières have been blown out [35:17]

Info

_____________________

An apocalyptical, suffocating and terrifying sound which emanates from their Sunno and Sovtek amps, from their impossible-tempo war drums, and from the ripping throat of the warrior queen. Nonetheless Monarch have been compared to the legends of this genre (Corrupted, Burning Witch, Sunno, etc.), and record after record, Monarch are proving these comparisons are accurate and true. Monarch deserve a place in the throne by their own values.

Big Business - Here Come the Waterworks

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1. Just As The Day Was Dawning
2. Hands Up
3. Shields
4. Grounds For Divorce
5. Another Fourth Of July... Ruined
6. Start Your Digging
7. I'll Give You Something To Cry About
8. Another Beautiful Day In The Pacific Northwest

Info

Big Business is a duo made up of Jared Warren (vocals, bass) and Coady Willis (drums, vocals). Warren was also once in the amazing sludge driven juggernaut that was Karp and Willis has previously spent time in Murder City Devils. While I was a fan of the duos first record Head for the Shallow, I was left feeling a bit under whelmed by it. I felt like with all that potential that the album should have been absolutely mammoth sounding. I mean, it sounded huge and it was most definitely loud and sludgy, but it wasn’t quite there yet. All of this has been taken care of on Here Come the Waterworks. Maybe that time they spent playing, touring, and recording as part of the Melvins had something to do with it, I don’t know. Regardless of whether that’s the case or not, the album is magnificent and blows their debut out of the water. On top if it being ridiculously crushing, it sounds like a more complete and fluid effort as well. I know it sounds like I am dogging on their debut a bit, but really...their debut was excellent too. However, they've somehow managed to make that effort seem average in comparison.

Each of these influences can be heard with variations of others, all delivered heavy-hearted and mad as hell. Loma Prieta - Our Lp is Your Ep

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1. With A Moment of Silence All Was Lost [1:00]
2. Welcome Spring Break 1989 [1:48]
3. It Went Down Like on an Episode of Law and Order [1:56]
4. I Have A Fear of Young Asian Boys [0:41]
5. Scream Triathlon [2:11]

Info

When it comes to jocking, there's no place better to be jocked than Northern California. This magical place is blowing up like an infirmary the day Ebola hits the streets. Their roster includes bands like Hella and Xiu Xiu, bands like Ceremony and Look Back and Laugh, bands like Funeral Diner and Bullets In, bands like Sabertooth Zombie and Burial Year...I think you get the idea. Now that Loma Prieta has plastered five songs onto compact disc as Our LP is Your EP there's one more reason to buy a plane ticket to the West Coast.

Loma Prieta sounds like super intense screamo. While they are pretty, there's this feeling that your speakers are slowly moving towards you and when they reach you, their three guitar assault will sink deep into your hide. If you were to put Neil Perry, She Notes the Chariots and The Number Twelve Looks Like You (minus the metal) into a cage for a full year, the end result's offspring would speak in the melody and rhythm that Loma Prieta does.

Each song will drive your mind into an adventure filled with musical imagery. As "It Went Down Like on an Episode of Law & Order," folds out, you start scribbling a math equation on the ceiling. Within twenty seconds you're jumping on the couch like you're the Easter Bunny. AND THEN, after another minute, you're painting the most beautiful portrait with a tulip as your brush. You finally finish up diving head first into the bathtub, very frenetically.

Band members Davy, Derrick, Sean and Val have previous experience (Get Get Go, Archeopteryx and Sailboats) which might explain why this EP sounds so tight. Loma Prieta has the intensity that so many metal and hardcore bands strive for without sounding metal or like 80's punk/hardcore. Instead of sounding amateurish, I find myself calling the hospital due to the jaw no longer connected to my face and the tongue rolling into the kitchen. Is this "The Mask" or am I being blown away?

It might not sound as powerful because I just finished reviewing La Quiete and giving them a high score, but lately I'm finding less and less quality screamo bands. Loma Prieta isn't just another 90's worship band; they sound fresh and are progressing in a manner that is quality. Here's to hoping that the next release by Loma Prieta will contain more than seven minutes of music.

Achilles - The Dark Horse

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1. Every Hour Wounds, The Last One Kills
2. Ivory
3. Over Our Heads
4. Dark Horse
5. In Lights
6. (Reprise)
7. Wake Me When It Thunders
8. Rushmore
9. Talons
10. )))

Info

Rising from the ashes of another Hex Records band, Building on Fire, Achilles has made a loud statement with their first full-length, The Dark Horse. Achilles might be recognizable to those who heard their split CD with labelmates Engineer last year. The Dark Horse was produced by Evan Patterson of Black Cross and Breather Resist notoriety and engineered at Chris Owens' (from Lords) studio. Achilles definitely has an affinity for the current Louisville crop of bands. Yes, Achilles has math-metal tendencies that channel the spirit of the musical behemoth that was Botch. One can hear this influence throughout this record, but Achilles go one step further and add a more garage rock feel to it. The vocals are consistently strong throughout the album and the musicianship is extremely well executed. Still, I kept hoping for something a little more from this record, almost like it was just missing some subtle element.

The Dark Horse opens strong with a powerful ditty entitled "Every Hour Wounds, the Last One Kills." A vicious, pounding rhythm serves as the backbone to this opening shot and it foreshadows what one can expect from this four-piece. This song also has guest vocals by Steve Sindoni of Breather Resist. Achilles follows that up with "Ivory" which is another stand out track that has guest vocals by Ryan Patterson of Black Cross and Coliseum. There is a definite foot stomping feel to the mood of this song that also has some excellent angular guitar sounds. The title track is all over the place and is a borderline musical mess that just never goes over that edge; that specifically gives the song a train wreck waiting-to-happen feel. There are more flashes of potential all over Dark Horse. The album ends on an instrumental piece entitled ")))" that is surprisingly short and to the point.

Overall, Achilles cranks out an admirable record that shows that they have potential to take on even the heaviest off their math-metal brethren. Not to say that this is all the band is because that would be a disservice to the well written whole that is The Dark Horse. The album just seemed to be missing that little sound that would truly make them unique and fresh. A worthwhile listen, The Dark Horse is definitely a sign of good things to come from Achilles, provided they soldier on as a band.

2. Secession
3. Deliverance
4. Bandit Queens/Pauper Kings
5. Kick Till It Breaks
6. The Border
7. In Darkness
8. Defeat
9. Unleash Hell
+ Bonus Tracks

Info

Formed from the wreckage of Catharsis, who set out to rescue the world from Western civilization only to end in ashes and defeat, Requiem has refused to record anything until now lest they perpetuate the commodity-oriented stupor that mires the would-be revolutionary underground in verbose inactivity. Finally, they have composed a half hour of music they feel might be able to do more to break hearts and inspire insane acts of resistance than it does to promote consumption and spectatorship. In nine tracks that range from mournful, muted beauty to operatic hardcore punk to the apocalyptic marching drums of street rioting, they pit raw fury and yearning against everything ugly in a desperate bid to rescue punk rock (not to mention music and modern life in general) from its own inertia.

Mahakala - Demo EP

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1. A Shovel Stuck In Teeth [2:08]
2.Pool Of Kerosene [3:25]
3. Bloodspit [2:40]
4. Streaming Guts (with Costas of Dark Star) [4:29]
5. Dictated Homicide Of A Retard [2:49]

Info

MAHAKALA were formed in 2005 by Smirnoff (vox, also in SLAVEBREED), Big Badda (guitar, ex-HEAVIERTHANGOD), Jim Bob (bass, also in SCUMS37, TASTE OF GRIEF) and Costas (drums, also in LORD13, HEAVIERTHANGOD). Influenced by old school punk, early heavy rock and bands of the stoner/sludge rock genre, the athenian sludge-sters recorded their first, self titled, and released it on the Spanish underground label Parade Records.

Performing live, in the first Summer Rock Festival (GR) and at several local venues along with swedish doom metallers GRAND MAGUS, british post hardcore rockers TAINT and greeks ENGINE-V, ROCKING BONES, SABBAH NAVAHTHANI, TARDIVE DYSKINESIA, ONE BLOCK SOCIETY, GOD.FEAR.NONE, SLAVEBREED, NOISELUST, O.C.B, LOW GRAVITY, SEMEN OF THE SUN, MADLEAF and STONEDEVILS amongst others, MAHAKALA gained the likes of all audiences and good comments by the local press.

The quartet's sound finally turned into a SABBATH-ically groovy sludge 'n' roll combined with elements of modern extreme sound and minimal doomy riffage. MAHAKALA, being a band of barely one year of existence, keep on performing, composing and recording brand new material for their upcoming full length album and -eventually- hiting the stage...

Iron Lung son gente de Artymus Pile y se despachan una bestial mezcla de estos con His Hero Is Gone!. Lana Dagales son un duo formado por gente de Brainoil y Dir Yassin que hacen la mezcla perfecta entre Man Is The Bastard, Spazz y Stack

____________________

This is a really great split between two solid underground grindcore bands, both of them pretty unknown but very talented and unique-sounding. Iron Lung is a guitar/drums duo from Reno who like to punk up their songs and hammer their point home, as these eight sharp and pummeling tracks demonstrate. Their subject matter is pretty morbid and gore-like, detailing surgical removal and death on songs like "Cervical Laser," "Horizontal Respiration" and "Scanoptic." The result is genuinely scary at times, like "Nails": "100,000 degrees of intense heat concentrated on a small facet of metal (Let it be iron) / Is more than ample supply needed to liquefy / Then mold it into nails being hammered into your coffin."

Lana Dagales from Oakland, CA is even better to these ears. This bass/drum-toting duo has been around since 1998, but this is only their second album yet, and it's absolutely huge, wonderful stuff. They rage through 12 tracks in their allotted half of this 14-minutes (total) split, and the music buzzes with frenzy; it's angry and astounding, massive and miserable. All tracks bleed into each other, making this sound like one huge grindcore feast. It's daring, challenging and brutal, and it makes for some surprisingly beautiful and accomplished listening. It is certainly one of this year's most exciting and devastating hardcore performances caught on tape.

Gantz & Gameness & Amen ra & Vuur - Split

Tracklist

1. Gameness - Ressucites et remeurs
2. Gameness - Immobile Destinée
3. Amen Ra - A Promise To Make
4. Amen Ra - Offerande (this is the body of christ)
5. Gantz - Hors Conditions (La mélodie du chaos)
6. Gantz - Porté par le vide
7. Vuur - State One
8. Vuur - Dying Breed
9. Vuur - Bitter

Info

GAMENESS delivers sweet chaos. Energic screamo sung in French the way we love. The band assumes finally his passion for a hardcore called screaming emo, a music with intenses part; chaotics with some lulls.

AMEN RA is what we could describe as pure chaos. The melodies of doom, mixed with the tragedy of noisecore. Pure emotion entered the dark way of life to emerged as a spark of energy well driven by their passion they capture together into their chaoscore. Some have compared them to bands like ISIS or CULT OF LUNA. So you know what to expect then!

GANTZ plays a dark and intense music leaving free court with its emotions. The crystalline arpeggios succeed the chaotic hammerings to give life to pieces melancholic persons being able like BREACH, ENVY, ISIS. The texts are very personal, drawn from the everyday life, and various experiments, imbroglio of feelings and perpetual questionings on becoming it of humanity....

VUUR play powerful raging manic screaming ultra-emotional melodies. For the name-droppers: most people tend to compare us with a chaotic mix of REVERSAL OF MAN, ACME, DROP DEAD, RORSCHACH, a bit of MÖRSER and some BORN AGAINST thrown in between.Whatever. Structured & pissed chaos rules, so to speak.

Nearly an hour's worth of massively heavy midpaced sludginess, with plenty of mood shifts, starting off straight away with the monolithic 17-minute "I Love it When You Crawl" - complete with tons of lengthy instrumental passages making use of noisy guitar textures and droning notes over repetitive rhythms from the bass and drums (spiced up by some nice cymbal work on the percussion). Honestly, it seems far more like something that would be used to end off a full-length, especially in how it breaks down to complete noise for the later chunk of the track, so I find it to be a rather ineffective introduction to the disc, but it's a unique decision nonetheless. As a whole, this record represents more of the bitter, sludgy "stoner rock" for which Cable is known. I personally hate the term "stoner rock" and find this work to be darker and more menacing/creative than most of that whole style, but as a reference point I guess it makes sense. I certainly love the production. The bass is fuzzed out all over the place but still maintains a balanced presence against the guitars, which are fuzzily distorted but a bit smoother, and the percussion is totally warm and natural. Everything blends together perfectly to form a cohesively dense wall of sound, with the acerbic vocals falling dead center. It's great how the bass is literally as important and central as the guitars are, though. Nice work on that. "Empty & Loaded" is far shorter (less than three minutes) and more focused around some of the key rock influences, while "It's My Right to Be an Asshole" is much sparser and more openly melodic in a way, letting the riffs have more breathing room and dropping back some of the vocal aggression a touch (even going so far as to include some raw acoustic guitars, piano, and female singing for the second half). Seven-minute instrumental "The Reason I'm Poor" also takes a more diverse road, opening with clean guitars and powerfully thick melodies that are among the most blatant herein - constantly shifting back and forth between louder and heavier moments over softer and more spacious runs. The title track closes things out, revisiting the lengthier running times with a 12+ minute attack of ominous chord progressions and borderline doomy tempos/aesthetics that once more contrast hard hitting rhythms with softer and more open clean textures (making use of its time far more consistently and effectively than "I Love it When You Crawl"). The layout looks fucking beautiful, too. No lyrics are included and there's very little text at all, just some bleak landscape photos that create a very consistent visual atmosphere. Damn nice work there. Honestly, this would've been a stronger and more fluid listen without that first track (or were it moved to the end of the CD if absolutely necessary), as it's basically a 17-minute waste of space and I skip it every time I listen to the disc. Many of the other songs are some of the finest I've ever heard from the band (granted I haven't heard anything they've done since 2001's "Northern Failures"), so ignoring what I feel is that initial hitch in continuity/force, I'm all for this one.

3. In Tongues - Tunnel Vision [3:11]
4. Lords - You Can't Bring Me Down [3:06]

Info

Split EP from two stellar Louisville, KY bands. Lords (Jade Tree Records) contribute one new song of their angry, loud and gritty rock as well as a blazing cover of Suicidal Tendencies' "You Can't Bring Me Down" for good measure. IN TONGUES (ex-members of Kodan Armada) balance out the split with two tracks of heartfelt and mature post hardcore falling somewhere between Majority Rule and At The Drive In. Intricate songwriting and a powerful performance.

Info

Growing up together in Marshall, MI, the members of Small Brown Bike have been friends, bandmates, and minor bike mechanics the majority of their lives. When bothers Mike and Ben Reed (guitar and bass), Travis Dopp (guitar), and Dan Jaquint (drums) were looking for band names for the project they started in the fall of 1996, they looked back on their collective small-town childhood and came up with Small Brown Bike, named for a sentimental Frankenstein bicycle that they had pieced together from parts as kids. After self-releasing their No Place Like You 7" in 1997 and following up in 1998 with the (and don't forget me) 7" and appearing on a couple compilations, the band attracted the attention of Gainesville, FL's No Idea Records through relentless regional touring and a fraternal relationship with Hot Water Music. No Idea released Our Own Wars in 1999 and followed up with their Dead Reckoning CD/LP in the fall of 2001. The next year, the band hooked up with The Casket Lottery for a split EP

For the highly-awaited follow-up to 2005's "Struggle" Poostew headed to 3rd A Studio in Hamburg with Jens Ballaschke on the producing helm where Germany's steamroller finally received the punishing sound it deserves. They've increased the speed again and deliver 14 high explosive deathgrind tracks. Their debut "Struggle" convulsed the extreme music scene with the stunning mixture of no-compromise grindcore, well-placed melodies and the hardcore approach but "Plutocracy" will just destroy everything on its way.

Insect, Crucificados, Fuckedupsunday, Dempe...)

Since the very beginning back in 1998 THE JAMSESSION has been on a neverending quest for doing our own thing, which has lead us on strange paths in heavy and xperimental music.Going thru the whole catalogue of releases you'll find everything from insane hardcore, progressive punk and doomy dark metal. It was never our goal to make it as strange as possible, it´s just our way to deal with the smalltown boredom and the result of 5 different individuals trying to express themself as one unit. Our latest recordings is by far our darkest, yet still progressive an intense. At the time it
seems like we're walking down the dark and harsh road (having the new non-recorded songs in mind).

Info

What's the Tomas Lindberg count up to now? 1,000,005 bands or something? Not unlike Skitsystem, Disfear plays ripping hardcore/punk with a metallic edge, though honestly this isn't as metallic as I expected it to be. Some of Skitsystem's work is heavier and more metal tinged than this material, which is heavy as fuck, but definitely rooted in hardcore, with a Discharge meets Motörhead sort of flare to the leads and some of the more rocked out rhythms. Lindberg's vocals are those same unmistakable screams as always, of course. From a writing standpoint I like this stuff a lot, especially songs that mix up the tempos and get a little faster (such as the title track). Admittedly there's not quite enough variety here to keep the entire 38 minutes exciting, and I don't particularly think that some of these songs warrant running times of three-and-a-half to four minutes since the structures are simple and repetitive, but such issues are very minor. The recording is awesome. Definitely one the better records that Nasum's Mieszko Talarczyk has had a hand in. The drums are nice and natural, the bass is there, the distortion tones on both the guitars and bass are heavy but very textured, the mix is clear, the vocals are abrasive but not at all over the top... very nice. Sometimes Mieszko's work is hit or miss, so I was a little worried that it wouldn't sound this strong, but thankfully nothing bothers me. The layout's not bad at all. The coloring is dark and consistent, there are messy textures all over the place, the photos are well handled, the imagery works, the typefaces match up with everything else, etc. And I actually really like the fucking bitterness of the lyrics a lot: "...it's a race to the end this vicious circle of lies no, never again the sun it will greet my eyes trapped in a circle of lies my life seems to be my crime but with 26 years filled with nothing I think that I've served my time." This is good stuff. A tad boring due to its redundancy, but good nonetheless. I'd love to hear them employ a bit more variety in the future, but I can definitely live with this. I bet a lot of people will be a little taken aback by this at first. The rock 'n' roll influences, while definitely upped in the aggression department, surely took me by surprise.

Imagine living in a town that basically exists to serve the leisure-time needs of an increasingly bloated and ignorant populace that rolls in every summer like an unclaimed uncle. In the warm months, you wait on hand and foot for people who define vacation by what kind of sticker they can put on the SUV back home. In the cold months, you vow to yourself "never again." Welcome to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, home to MASSACRE OF THE UMBILICAL CORD.

Featuring an astonishingly adept trio of musicians, MASSACRE OF THE UMBILICAL CORD viciously and unapologetically espouses and delivers the good tidings of "Eat Shit And Die." Requiring the services of only one drummer, a guitarist, and a vocalist, MOTUC is the sound of a tourist trap being held captive and peppered with precise blasts of incinerating death during peak season.

Like a reporter called to the ensuing carnage, Magic Bullet Records has signed on to bring the sights and sounds of the MASSACRE to the outside world. Label founder Brent Eyestone offered the following: "Pathetic times call for desperate measures. Underground metal/hardcore is being marketed as a playground for chugga chugga cyclops boys wearing eyeliner and hoping you're not keen to their blatant Cre and GnR wannabe image ripoff campaign. Massacre is the complete opposite of the prevailing trend and in many ways a gigantic FUCK YOU to a music industry that gets more laughable with each photo shoot. We're more than happy to live out on the fringe with these dudes and throw Molotovs at the world."

Info

If Black Flag and Ministry and The Melvins had never existed and, furthermore, if it suddenly became attractive to make plangent, impossibly repetitive music with virtually incomprehensible lyrics/vocals, then (and only then) would Die Princess Die be embraced by the punk zeitgeist as brilliant or tolerable.

But if you can skip through their initial freakouts and make it to the grinding orgasm of “The Racer” and similar whirling punkcore epics, then you will find that Lions Eat Lions is not all that different from the groundbreaking punk classics you devoured in the early-80’s when it was far less trendy to whine, wail, spit and convulse than it is today. The glittery bestiality-tinged cover art is a nice bonus as well.

Info

PEIREMANS + is the side-project by four musicians from different basque bands like Berri Txarrak, Bide Ertzean, Kashbad or Balerdi Balerdi. Their only release til now was a five-track EP launched by alternative label Bonberenea Ekintzak in early 2005. Peiremans is actually the name of an unlucky football player who came to Real Sociedad (main football team in Donostia-San Sebastian) and broke his knee at the first trainning session. He could never play a simple match with his team so he was left to second division's Eibar, where he decided to leave football due to a deep deppresion. So Peiremans + aims to be a little homage to all those losers in life. They only make a few live appearences, so please stay tunned!!

Info

Botch is perhaps the greatest "heavy" band of the last 10 years, as anyone who has witnessed the Botch live experience might attest to. When Botch took the stage, not only were they unquestionably the greatest band of the night (regardless of who else was playing), but for that 45 minutes they were the fucking greatest band on earth. The first time one saw Botch was a mind bending experience - though afterwards they claimed their set was terrible, people often thought to themselves, if this was an off night I'd hate to be the bands playing with them on a good day...

A good day for Botch consisted of utterly laying to waste everything in their path and having a grand old time while doing so. The same is true of their recordings, huge monstrous concoctions of metal, noise, indie rock guitar trickery, full of depth and minute secrets which slowly secreted themselves with successive listens. There is no question that part of what made Botch so great is their ability as players, but more important, and even more impressive perhaps, was they way they fit the pieces together - odd time signatures, seemingly impossible riffs made to sound easy, the occasional melodic passages, and devastating anthemic movements that managed to inspire hordes while simultaneously escaping the redundant simplicity of the conventional hardcore sing along.

In their years of existence Botch managed to push out a slew of 7's, split EPs, and two full lengths. With each successive release Botch upped the anti considerably - not just for themselves as a band, but for the underground as a whole. Their first full length, American Nervoso.. (early 98) put them on the map and thrust them into the league of then hardcore heavy weights, i.e. Converge, Coalesce, Deadguy, etc. Following this album with a few years of extensive touring and preparation for the next release, Botch elevated their status within the scene (as well as outside of), and began to grab the attention of the world at large. However it wasn't until the release of their second masterpiece (and we don't use that term loosely) We Are the Romans, that Botch fever took hold nationally and internationally, infecting thousands and garnering the praise of music journalists far and wide.

It's been a long ride since the release of We Are the Romans and much has happened in the meantime. Botch continued to tour both the US as well as the European continent and has seen many new bands emerge, building upon the tracks they themselves helped to create. Bands like Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, and many others have continued to push the envelope of technical ferocity and awe inspiring performances in the live setting, but still Botch stand alone - proving themselves to be ultimately one of the most entertaining, challenging, and unique entities to have ever existed with in the hardcore realm and beyond it. Sadly, Botch decided to call it quits in February 2002 and played their final show in June 2002.

There is no reunion in the works. As proud as we are of the band and as much as we're all still friends, there is no plan to do a reunion. zero, zilch, nada. however, we do appreciate everyone's continuing interest in the band. thanks.
