Words That Burn - Spawning Ground for Hatred

Image Hosted at ImageHosting.us

Tracklist

02.Force Fed Trauma [1:17]
03. Scapegoat [1:49]
04. Feed the Nightmare [1:29]

10. Reasons Run Dry [1:52]
11. Drained Reaction [2:11]
12. Hail Skatan [2:15]
13. Riot Squad [1:59]

Info

13 tracks of grinding hardcore/punk in 23 minutes, complete with low growls and midrange screams, blasting drums and thick rhythms, a good balance of tempos that never gets too fast or too slow, some crust influences, etc. It's nothing out of the ordinary, and a lot of the songs sound the same (due in part to all those quick note bend leads ala Masskontroll), but it's pretty good for what it is. I actually like no nonsense tracks like the straight ahead brutal "Relive the Pain" a little better than the other tracks, I don't know why... "Drained Reaction" is slower and heavier at times though, and that works out pretty damn nicely as well. They close with a cover of "Riot Squad" by Toxic Reasons, which brings in more of a punk influence and makes for a nice ending. I don't mind the production. It's on the rough side but it does work. The bass sounds sick and has some good distortion over it that keeps it separate from the guitars, the drums sound fine, the vocals don't overpower, etc. I have no significant complaints. The cover art's alright (but I really like the black and white skull icon), and I don't mind that the bulk of the layout is black pages with the lyrics in plain white text, but a lot of the photos suck. It's no fun to open a CD booklet and be greeted by a hideous photo of someone shitting (literally) all over a George W. Bush doll for one thing, that's for sure. I could go either way on the lyrics. The topics are standard political attacks against racism, corruption, and that kind of thing, but it's nothing new. It also seems odd to me that there's only one song ("Hail Skatan") that has a sense of humor to it, when all of the others are so bleak. In the end, this is good, but it doesn't do much for me. I can listen to it and enjoy it, but it's not something that grabs my attention or particularly strikes me as all that interesting.

The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower has built a reputation for leaving people cheated or impregnated with obsession. And now TPTBUTET are going to turn the world on it's ears. The new full length LP, Love In The Fascist Brothel, has that magical quality that drives people on to the stage and into the sweaty dance pit every night. Seizing on that quality, TPTBUTET has pasted together an all-smart version of punk using spit, attitude, and sexuality.

Gods of GORE. That is the best way to describe how I feel about SANITYS DAWN after listening to "Chop Copper". Sick as fuck relentless brutality reminiscent in the style of NASUM which is probably one of the reasons I'm so fond of this release. SANITYS DAWN have created a very modern Grinding style with good production, great vocal variation and those 10 tonne heavy crushing riffs and drums.

Sick + Fast + Heavy + Loud = Good. Everyone knows that formula and "Chop Copper" will please all who agree with it. This is simply the best Grind release since NASUM's "Inhale/Exhale" and better than 99% of the genre. More passion, more energy, more aggression, more anger, more GORE. What more could I want? SANITYS DAWN give it all.

Almost 40 mins of uncompromising Grind noise with excellent raw production and a feeling of speed not to be missed is what is found in this release. Those who already know SANITYS DAWN however will be a bit surprised at the vocals as now they incorporate more screaming and mid pitched growling to the already impressive guttural "burps" of the vocalist. This adds to the variety of the album helping some who could easily be bored be drawn in a lot deeper to discover the true power of the aggression within the music.

Info

In 2006 there still remains a band that willingly gets in a van and drives it on their own to a gig happily booked by themselves to play to kids that didn't have to take a bank loan out to pay to get into said show. A band that doesn't stop to change a string when it breaks and instead throws the instrument down and drops an elbow on it and throws it into the crowd. A kind of band that will in our lifetime die a horrible death and be taken over by the cold hand of insincerity and greed. This band is a punk rock band, this band is a hardcore band, this band is DIY to the grave. This band is The Smackdown. For fans of Refused, JR Ewing, Blood Brothers.

At times heavy and at other times very much melodic, this Portland, Oregon based four piece never ceases to hold your attention. With an ambient and jazzy instrumental track as an interlude between the first and second parts of this journey, Life At These Speeds present an an epic and driving classic. People who are remotely interested in the sounds of Shotmaker, Drive Like Jehu, Rites Of Spring and Twelve Hour Turn will be instant fans of this record. Info

Finally a life-sign from the German hardcore scene. Realign from northern Germany present us this 7 song mcd, including a fresh mixture of various styles and influences. Three of the songs have German lyrics the rest is in English and they deal mostly with personal topics, but there’s also some words about religion and false-pride. Unfortunately the songs are sometimes just a bit too strange and confused, they sometimes mix heavy new-school parts with jazz-like melodic parts, and that just doesn’t fit together. On the one hand I’m really glad to see that more and more bands are going their own way and try to create something new, but on the other hand I’m just not used to these sounds and it takes time to get into it. I mean, musically this is very professional and if you’re into more experimental hardcore bands you should definitely check this out.

Furious and heavy Rock'n'Roll from Boston. This album contains the Tortuga Records MCD, plus 2 extra tracks as well as some Fear, Misfits and Black Flag covers ! This masterpiece is brooding, psychopathic example of Stoner Rock done with conviction and power, unlike the vast amount of dross that tends to clog up the genre today.

04- Le Desespoir Des Singes

Info

Coming from Caen, France, Aussitôt Mort (as soon as dead in french) began playing together in early 2005 : soon after the Apollo Program break up, Antoine, Milouze and Greg decided they wanted to carry on making music together... They teamed up with good friends and great musicians Pierre (also bassplayer in Amanda Woodward) and Cédric (from the experimental-post-rockish local band None-Id). No rules were set, no boundaries erected, just the usual “making music you like with good friends” thing. They first tried to create a new style, “emo-doom”, which could have been called “emoom”, or “doomo”, but they kind of failed. Several months later, some songs have been put together, recorded in le Studio de la Souleuvre, a remote studio in the Normandy countryside. During the process, some played french bowls, a dead mouse was found in a bed, things went pretty good.

Info

In June 1997 started LENGTH OF TIME with members coming from different acts out of the Bxl(Brussels) scene destined to be a side-project. After a first but impressive demo and alot of shows everywhere around. L.O.T became quickly a band in his enitely dimension and recorded their welknown classic album 'approach to the new world'. This was the start of their busy tour and show schedule. L.O.T embraces a very dark and pessimistic vision on humanity and is in total war with the morose atmosphere of our world. All members growing up with the metal and hardcore from the 80's, L.O.T offers a wide variety in the musical part and every new release sounds different..last year was the release for their 'shame on this weakness modern world', and is their most aggressive and hardest one. The band has just released their 3th opus entitled 'how good the world could be...again'. This is a strong and very mature release, and might be the new face of the band for the future.

14. Je Trouve Tout Très Agréable

Info

Well, this label seems to be onto some hot shit over in France, because this band opens up with a mega heavy crusher of a track before plowing into some quirky material that I can't pin down. Math metal, indie rock, metalcore, post-hardcore... all play equal roles. There's a lot of dissonance, thick and pounding chord progressions, quirky note-based riffs, caustic screams that at times blend into very subtle singing, and then some. Plodding distorted basslines and hugely resonant percussion lay the foundation for guitars that are a bit less linear and more constantly shifting, while the vocals sporadically break in and do their thing in the midst of it all. That makes it sound more chaotic than it is, so I'll clarify that this is very structured and tight material, though a certain frenetic and loose element definitely plays a role - mainly in the form of biting guitar chords/textures that get much more abrasive and noisy over the bass and drums, but the playing is always totally controlled, giving them an edge. The indie side comes in as far as there being a definite sense of melody (generally aggressive melody) that carries things along, sometimes very understated, and the vocals sort of have a hint of that stuff as well - in the best possible sense, though. "Oh My God, She Doesn't Look So Well" is a brief intermission of somber piano that rises into a cascade of distorted noise, "MMaybe" is driven quietly by a heavy Fugazi meets Quicksand harmonic riff and partially spoken vocals and opens up into some stuttered chords with lots of indie-esque note bends and choppy pull-off runs, and "Kill Luca" opens with some Botch sounding riffs and shifts over into some excellent discordant chords and intense screams. "Transition From Existential Emptiness..." uses lots of clean guitars and distant percussion with droning melodies and some of the most tangible singing vocals for an excellent piece (one of the finest herein), while the following "...To Dystrophy" brings back some of the brutal heaviness of opener "Las Vegas" for another surefire winner. The sound is pretty dense and closely knit, bordering on being a little muddy, but it's so fucking warm that I really like it a lot. The guitars are just bright enough to get that vicious bite happening and not overpower anything, the drums are totally natural, the bass manages to make its presence felt, and the vocals are usually under a light filter that caps them off and holds them dead against the music, which works superbly in this framework. So I don't think I would change anything other than perhaps brightening up some of the percussion and maybe making the bass guitar even more defined. The layout is very minimal, using only shades of black and white with high contrast artwork and faint images of city buildings. The lyrics (Maybe?) appear inside, also very faint, as one large block of text - all in French - so I'm not able to offer any insight there (Though I believe the record title translates to something like "Our Love is Powerful Enough to Destroy This Whore of a World"?). It could definitely stand to be a bit more visually interesting, though it's not so bad. It's clean, if nothing else. I like this. I was kind of hoping the entire disc would've been as crushing as "Las Vegas" insinuated it might be, but it certainly ended up being more of a surprising and diverse ride, for better or worse. Not bad at all. This is definitely another powerful French act to keep an eye on from Radar Swarm.

Nachtmystium - Instinct: Decay

4. Chosen By No One
5. Circumvention
6. Eternal Ground

8. Here's To Hoping
9. Abstract Nihilism
10. Decay

Info

Chicago's Nachtmystium have been haunting the dank basements and bat-filled belfries of America's burgeoning black metal scene since 1998, but like most of their countrymen, their works were generally too indebted to Scandinavian sources to earn them credentials to contend on the worldwide stage. That may be about to change with 2006's Instinct: Decay, an album that generally stays true to the group's intentionally primal and lo-fi black metal roots, while simultaneously plunging over the abyss of progressive experiment. Virtually all of its tracks are fueled by the same sort of questing fearlessness that extreme metal fans have come to expect from contemporary artists like Norway's Enslaved and Sweden's Opeth: uncompromising, heavy as fuck, but streaked by multiple moods, dynamic density and unexpected twists. Following the brief introductory piece "Instinct," "A Seed for Suffering" launches the album on traditionally pounding, raging, and desolate BM brutality; yet it suddenly cracks open like an egg to reveal an evocative acoustic bridge worthy of Portland folk-metal stars Agalloch, then files a coda of renewed violence with melodic nuances which impart an emotion rarely heard in BM: hope! Subsequent notable cuts include "Chosen by no One," which alternates frenetic riffing with groovier sections also streaked with near-symphonic layers of synthesizer melodies; "Eternal Ground," which includes a memorably musical guitar solo and ending riffs more blues-based rock than proper metal (a trick Darkthrone have flirted with in recent years); and "Here's to Hoping," which goes folk-metal in an entirely different way thanks to steady-thumping polka rhythms that could turn slam-dancing into square-dancing. Maybe not... Anyway, those with a thirst for more conventional, unadorned BM carnage, can still get their kicks from traditionally thrashy, buzz-saw-riffs-and-blast-beat-fests like "The Antichrist Messiah," "Abstract Nihilism," and "Keep them Open" -- though the third, too, offers an unforeseen element with its garbled computer noise outro. Ending spacey and atmospheric instrumental "Decay" puts the lid on a masterful effort: at once retro and avant-garde, but, most importantly, well composed and entertaining from start to finish. ~

Two years after an impressive, albeit short (6 minutes) 2004 debut EP Bi-Coastal bruisers Black Cobra return with their first full-length, Bestail. The band, a collaboration between two ex-members of pioneering tar-pit titans -16- and Cavity, mold doom, hardcore, sludge and even grind into impossibly contorted and sonically dense amalgamations. “Density” is the key term here – Black Cobra conjure a sound so impenetrable, dark and massed, that at full volume, you’d half-expect air to turn to suffocating matter. Beastial, in my humble opinion, is really that friggin’ heavy.

But in this world, just being “heavy” isn’t enough – there’s more to songs than sheer gravitas. On Bestial, Black Cobra have 11 songs and 36 minutes in which to express themselves. This in contrast to our initial introduction to the band, as powerful as it was, only giving the listener 360 seconds of sonic stew. Black Cobra use the time wisely here, the first 3 tracks, “One Nine”, “Thrown From The Great Heights” and “El Equis” particularly having a pleasantly visceral impact with a violent, grind-like fury that was missing from their initial EP. From there they transition nicely into “Beneath”, with it’s subtle, soft Asian-influenced intro belying a slow-moving and very-fucking-angry bellicose goliath about 30 seconds in. The menacing, apocalyptic vibe of “Broken On The Wheel” also bears mentioning, as well as the Unearthly Trance-on-Satan intensity of “Sugar Water” and the darkly atherogenic strains of “Sombra De Bestia”.

Really, I have nothing bad to say about the aptly titled Beastial, other than maybe the rabid vocal barks making me feel like I was a kid back in Temple City, CA living at home again. Yikes. In spite of my own tortured psyche, Beastial may go down as one of the most purely “Heavy” releases of ‘06 . It’d be a tough one to beat, in any case.

Info

The Pacific northwest has suddenly become a hot bed for hardcore. I only used to know of a few bands from the area that I actually liked, mainly Stay Gold. Now over the past three years, it has just exploded. Betrayed, Champion, The Shook Ones, The Answer, Go It Alone and a slew of other are all part of this explosion. Not only has this area exploded, it has put out some of the best melodic hardcore of this decade.

Sinking Ships has just added another goal for the team. Meridian is a gem. It's a mix of Champion and Stay Gold and it's just about as perfect as a melodic hardcore album can get. Meridian is basically a double EP made into a LP. It contains six new songs and it also contains the bands six song demo. This is a band to look out for. With the break up of Champion, don't be surprised if they fill their shoes nicely. This is a totally solid hardcore album and Kiss The Sharks is my favorite hardcore song of the year, so far anyway. You can also hear Sinking Ships on the Generation: A Hardcore Compilation on Revelation Records. This comp contains sixteen of the hottest and newest hardcore bands in the scene today. You can also check out Sinking Ships on their upcoming tours with Ignite/Comeback Kid and then with The Shook Ones.

Art rock hard rock? Is there such a thing? Can the foot stomping quality of AC/DC, soaring melodic angst of NIRVANA, mathematic thunder of MELVINS and arty aggression of THE JESUS LIZARD be woven into a snarling form of progressive hardcore? We say it can, and HARKONEN alone are the captains of this journey.

Info

I was really tempted to write one of those pretentious "Remember when hardcore was good? Remember when bands stood for something more than blah blah blah ... " leads, and then go on to crown Black Cross the new kings of hardcore, the first band in a while to make me remember why I once loved this stuff, etc. But then I remembered that those kinds of reviews are for old balding guys who "moved on" and now sit at home in khakis and think that Jimmy Eat World is "progressive." I'm sure there are plenty of good hardcore bands out there today; I'm just too lazy to find them. So high fives to whoever at EVR sent this our way. This record owns: worthwhile lyrics, above average musicianship, and I bet they fucking slaughter live. The press release throws around stuff like Swiz and Drive Like Jehu. I don't necessarily know about all that, but suffice to say its significantly more interesting than most, due in large part to the two dudes from renowned noisemasters National Acrobat. Add to the mix the yeller from By the Grace of God and FUCKING ENDPOINT (!!!) and you've got one of the better hardcore LPs in a couple years. Hot times.

Mad Professor - Evolution Dub

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1. Harder Than Babylon
2. No Man's Land
3. Kunte 96
4. Solar System
5. Kathmandu Dub
6. Cultural Explosion
7. Gringo Dread
8. Cosmic Ray
9. Village Gossip
10. Atonement Dub
11. Kiwi Culture

Info

With the release of Evolution of Dub, Neil "Mad Professor" Fraser's Black Liberation series was quickly eclipsing its predecessor, Dub Me Crazy, for sure consistency and quality. Though it was becoming clear that the new volumes weren't going to be as stylistically adventuresome as the sets of old, for solid, computerized roots, they were hard to beat. Keeping with the loose theme of African elevation, Fraser incorporates speech fragments from controversial Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan on a number of the tracks. There's also a smattering of vocal snippets from guests Horace Andy, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Kofi. Despite all this, the underlying rhythms are Evolution of Dub's greatest strength. Ariwa session guitarist Black Steel in particular is given room to shine on excellent cuts like "Harder Than Babylon" and "Cultural Explosion." The latter is a typically full and lively mix with snare shots lashing out and beats bubbling from the depths like primordial lava. "Gringo Dread" sports one of the album's heaviest basslines, leading a pared-down mix that could be described as dub-noir. "Village Gossip" is laced with dissonant, cinematic string scratches, while "Atonement Dub" incorporates the violin on dub's terms to great effect, like some bizarre update on Augustus Pablo's trademark melodica. Surprises may be few, but after the dearth of inspiration behind Dub Me Crazy sets like Hijacked to Jamaica and Dub Maniacs on the Rampage, Fraser's constant attention to detail on Evolution of Dub renders the familiar fresh once again.

Tracklist

02. October, November, Ohio
03. You're My Lionkiller
04. The Rain That Falls Won't Slow Me Down

Info

With an impressive line-up that includes Scott McCarver (ex-Mineral), Gabe Wiley (Pop Unknown, ex-Mineral), Matt Breedlove (Pop Unknown) and Rory Phillips (The Impossibles, ex-The Stereo), an element of pure, experience-bred songwriting can be expected. Beautiful instrumentation, immaculate guitar work, meticulous percussion and tender vocals deliver an onslaught of what is truly respectable in the underground. One of three bands to rise from the ashes of Mineral (others include Pop Unknown and The Gloria Record). A must have. Imbroco's "Northstar Is An Airplane" appears on Deep Elm's "Records For The Working Class, No. 2" sampler

3. Bis Aufs Messer [5:10]

5. Schöne Neue Jugend [3:30]
6. I.P. Pavlova [5:01]

Info

After tons of split releases w/ Funeral Diner, Racebannon, Anger is Beautiful, Blame Game a own 7" and discography CD - this is their first full length w/ 6 songs (28 minutes). They new record is so far the best recorded material by this band - which sometimes let me think on all those good old brutal german bands ala Acme, Loxiran and so on. ff you want your hardcore varied, volcanic and intense, independent not only in theory but also in practice, with thoughtful, socially aware lyrics, then Zann is your thing. Going strong since 1999, the five Germans epitomize all that made punk an important counterculture in the first place. Infusing an insightful political substance to their luminous musicianship, they clearly stand out as one of Germany ’s best contemporary hardcore purveyors. Both formats come on recyled paper w/ lyrics and explanations about their songs.

Borg 64 - They’re Using Nanoprobes

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

01-They're Using Nanoprobes
02-'Impossible' Is An Overrated Hype
03-Stockholm Must Die
04-Cyberpunk Is Dead
05-If I Wasn't Vegan I Would Eat Punks Like You For Breakfast
06-Double Backbreaker
07-Deconstructing A Mexican Stand-Off
08-You And Everyone You Know And Everyone They Know Are Going To Die
09-If You Love Me I Might Hate You Less

Info

There is something in the drinking water up there in the North of Sweden. After a complete hardcore scene in the little town of Umea (Refused, Cult Of Luna), now also Lulea is put on the map. Raised Fist already housed there, and with Breach they had a very great post hardcore band too. It is nice to know that after their split we did not have to search for a worthy successor.

Borg 64 makes an eclectic mix of hardcore, noise, and electronics. You could call them a cross-breed between Refused, Breach, and Alec Empire. Not the least names to be compared with, yet Borg 64 misses a little bit of the songwriting skills to be really placed among them. Aggression there is plenty on this record, a song like 'You And Everyone You Know And Everyone They Know Are Going To Die' leaves out any misunderstanding about this. 'They Are Using Nanoprobes' makes you bounce around the room without allowing much time to catch a breathe. Also because of this the record lasts exactly long enough with its 35 minutes. The electronic drones and bleeps are pushed a little to the background with which I think Borg 64 missed some of the chance to create a completely unique sound. As of yet this is just a smashing progressive hardcore recording with a sharp razor voice, and well, that is also very much good enough for me. Code:Breaker proves with this and the other post hardcore releases this year (Unfold, Lolita Stasi) to be a worthy successor of the Rage Of Achilles label.

Young Widows - Settle Down City

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1. Settle Down City
2. Almost Dead Beat
3. Glad He Ate Her
4. Small Talk
5. Formererer
6. Bruised Knees
7. Mirrorfucker
8. The Charmers
9. New Forest
10. The First Half
11. We Don't Know

Info

From the reverb-drenched inspiration of Regulator Watts/Hoover to the bass and drums lock-groove perfected by Shellac and the Jesus Lizard, YOUNG WIDOWS gladly wears influences on its sleeve. Evan Patterson’s signature inventive guitar work is intact and at its peak here, while the rhythm section of Nick Theineman and Geoff Paton lay down syrup-thick grooves, recalling Pacific Northwest heavyweights (think Melvins, Karp, even Nirvana), and British post-punk, ala Gang Of Four. Settle Down City contains 11 songs of rock-solid, grooving, hypnotic, heavy, noise-rock anthems. This LP has our usual attention to detail and hand-assembled cover art - yet this is our biggest and best full color, double sided screen printed cover yet! CD on Jade Tree.

Fucked Up - Epics In Minutes

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1 Color Of Removal
2 What Could've Been
3 Baiting The Public
4 Last Man Standing
5 Litany
6 Police
7 Circling The Drain
8 Reset The Ride
9 A Light That Never Comes On
10 Generation
11 Red
12 Dance Of Death
13 Cult Radio Set
14 Demo
......+ 7 bonus tracks

Info

This is a collection CD of most every song from the band's vinyl releases to date, often appearing as alternate mixes from the versions on the actual EP's. Apparently the band prefers the 7" format and is just doing this to satiate non-vinyl-loving fans who want to hear their music. According to the liner notes some of the records represented herein weren't out when CD was put together, hence a few missing tracks. I admire that decision as a fan of music who hates buying 7"s only to have them released on collection CD's soon afterwards, but I'm not sure I agree with that decision because making such a CD as complete as possible is generally the best way to go. Anyway, what you're in for is a lot of rock 'n' roll with a hardcore/punk attitude/edge. But there's no denying the rock here, be it in the form of a quick lead break or a simple, blues based chord progression. The vocals are gruff as fuck and definitely add a lot more anger to the songs, which I love. The tracks included were taken from the sessions for "No Pasaran", "Police", "Baiting", "Litany", and "Dance of Death", as well as live tracks recorded on CIUT 89.5 FM, and the band's original demo. Most of the recordings are pretty damn consistent here. Part of that might be due to a solid mastering job, and there are of course some subtle differences, but the band seems to know how to achieve their sound. It's of course pretty raw, but the mixes are even, it's thick, and it sounds about right for their approach to rocked out hardcore/punk. I could live without the live and demo tracks because the recordings are shoddy, but as a document of the band it's cool to have 'em here. The layout looks pretty cool, so you'll get photos, flyers, the original record covers, brief yet interesting liner notes about each recording session, etc. The only thing that bothers me is that the tracklist on the back, while it looks cool, is hard to read, and they don't include song titles for the demo. Also, the tracks seem to be arranged in a sort of haphazard order as far as chronology goes (the order is listed wrong on the traycard as well), which is strange… I don't know, a cleaner organization that would be easier to follow may or may not have been helpful. All in all I like this CD a lot because the songs rock and it's cool to have a lot of this stuff on one disc back to back. I definitely think things could've been handled in a slightly more listener friendly matter, but fuck it.
