Info

Year of no light started after too many belgian beers under the sun of the ending summer of 2001. Slightly but undoubtly it slid down to gloomier atmospheres as the inherent chaos of Bordeaux's caves and harshness of winter made their common work. As the line-up was getting solid around the 5 actual members escaped from acts as Metronome charisma, Deja mort and Nexus sun the band clarified their intentions and started to build the basis of what would be their first demo recorded in 2004 before touring spain for some dates.

More and more shows were played with bands such as Isis, Moho, Fennesz, Born dead Icons, Lack, Explosions in the sky, High on fire or Unsane. The rather general critical acclaim of the demo quoting them as being "The Cure playing sludge" combined with live reviews becoming more and more encouraging compeled the band into the writing of new tracks that would finally end up being recorded at Rec studio under the direction of Serge Morratel in the fall of 2005. A year later this material ends up as a 2LP on E-vinyl & Atropine and as a cd on Radar swarm.

Info

The dead may or may not really hate the living, but you can rest assured that fans of extreme hardcore probably won't hate Shock and Awe. THE DEAD HATE THE LIVING unfurls a banner of neo-metalcore by way of grindcore by way of the Robotic Empire sound. This CD takes hyperactive thrash and merges it with a quirky sense of melody. If hardcore thrash can be argued to be moving into a postmodernist phase, then THE DEAD HATE THE LIVING is perhaps a solid example of that migration. Occasionally the CD gets bogged down in what might best be described as screamo (e.g. "Pale for Weariness") but it isn't too distracting and frankly they even do that sound well.

Veronica Lipgloss And The Evil Eyes - Witch's Dagger

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1- Driving thru The Pain
2- Mars
3- Strip Mall Glass
4- Just For Fun
5- Flickering Reels
6- Rats
7- Like Lead
8- Unicorn Song
9- Bleed To The Beat
10- Benny's Nightmare
11- Let Me See Your Eyes

Info

Veronica Lipgloss and The Evil Eyes owe a lot to the death rock that arose simultaneously in the big scenes of the early ’80s. They've got the seasick low end of the Birthday Party, the sax skronk of No Wave New York, and the screeching and reverb of 45 Grave. They avoid the moves that turned goth into a joke: Clumsy drum machine programming; overtreated guitars; dripping mascara; smug kinkiness and blasphemy. In short, they don't moan about death, and they've got a sound that's alive.

To be honest, they maintain the dripping mascara. And there's a lot of kink in these grooves. It gets a fresh reworking. The bass keeps time way up front, holding things together while everyone else layers rock and avant ideas in equal measure. The drummer is robotic at times, but breaks into jazzy fills. "Just for Fun" has a set of cowboy chords that are pretty much lifted from the Pixies. But they damage the middle of the song, and the abrasiveness of the chanted vocal line keeps it from ever approaching collegiate crowd-pleasing. There's plenty more echoing guitar, but saxophone and synth take over for whole tracks. That thick bass keeps grinding away, and with vocalist Rhani Remedes' shrieks, it keeps this band's personality consistent. While their approach is big and open, distinguishing them from other post-punkish acts of late, it’s got a grit that never seems forced.

Sax riffing is where this band really stands out. The reeds provide a path out of what sinks gothic music so often; the desire to be dance floor friendly while reveling in ugliness. Not many rock bands (to say nothing of dance music) have incorporated sax as fully as this band – "Mars" and "Benny's Nightmare" continue the corpse-on-the-sidewalk mood of the other tracks. They don't use sax to evoke the imaginary lounges of David Lynch. It’s right there in the middle of the sound, another grimy tone playing off of Remedes' caterwaul.

For a first album that lurches through a range of nightmare styles, Veronica Lipgloss have a distinct personality. It's trashy, but content to crawl around in the gutter. The dirges plod along with as much momentum as the fast ones. A band that is this comfortable in it's reptile skin hasn't shown up for a while. This debut is one of the best of the year.

Info

One of many bands that never seemed to get their due during their existence, THE NATIONAL ACROBAT established a legacy that finds the band reaching nearer to legendary status as each year passes. Its members have gone on to form the backbone of Louisville, Kentucky’s current indie music scene in BLACK CROSS (Equal Vision Records), CHRISTIANSEN (Revelation Records), BREATHER RESIST (Deathwish Inc), and Initial’s newest signing – LORDS. Along with their friends and contemporaries in CAVE IN, ISIS, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, BURN IT DOWN, HARKONEN, ANODYNE, BURNT BY THE SUN, KEELHAUL and others, they were part of a brief but important explosion of bands formed with roots in the ideas and urgency of hardcore, yet forging beyond that genre’s restraints to include elements of many other musical styles. Briefly dubbed “noisecore” by indie press, the ad hoc anti-movement disappeared as quickly as it began. Some bands broke up, others skyrocketed in popularity, some still toil in obscurity. THE NATIONAL ACROBAT broke up. TNA, the title originally planned for their never completed full length, compiles every single song ever recorded by THE NATIONAL ACROBAT. All three CD EP’s, the 7”, as well as various compilation tracks, selected live tracks, and an unreleased SEX PISTOLS cover song are included here.

Formed in 1998 by guitarist / songwriter Evan Patterson (now of BLACK CROSS and BREATHER RESIST) and also including Ryan Patterson (BLACK CROSS), Robby Scott (CHRISTIANSEN), and Stephen George (LORDS), THE NATIONAL ACROBAT set forth on a mission to burn every musical bridge they crossed. Fronted by vocalist Casper Adams, whose bratty onstage antics coupled with the meticulously constructed musical mayhem provided the perfect amount of levity for the barrage of sonic fury let loose by the rest of the band, and earned the Acrobat a reputation as a formidable and always entertaining live act. While THE NATIONAL ACROBAT took their cues from sources like THE NATION OF ULYSSES, BORN AGAINST, DEADGUY, DRIVE LIKE JEHU, and JESUS LIZARD, they were often compared to contemporary bands such as REFUSED, INK & DAGGER, and BOTCH.

Radar Swarm has become Europe's answer to Hydra Head, consistently releasing top-quality post-metalcore noise from (mostly) European artists that always manage to knock our socks off, situated in killer packaging and with an overall flair for presenting their art in top-notch mode. Each new release we get our hands on from Radar Swarm continues to rule us, so we're always looking forward to what they've got coming out.
Based on the punishing blast of angular metalcore rage that opens CORTEZ's Initial, I was expecting this to fall in with the likes of Botch and Anodyne, but this is far from just another math-skronk demolition unit. While CORTEZ detonates some massive horizontal riffing and explosive mosh that does indeed channel the intricate vitriol of Botch, this Swiss outfit just as easily glides into an epic, atmospheric post-rock majesty that fans of Isis and Mogwai will swoon over. What's surprising is that this combo is capable of creating such hese epic riffs and towering melodic spires without the aid of a bassist. With just drums, tortured vocals, and a massively bottom-heavy guitar tone, CORTEZ rain down brutal discordant wipeouts that flow seamlessly in and out of immense minor-key riffs and cunningly effective post rock arrangements (with horns and piano and other decidedly un-metalcore instrumentation) and sheets of massed guitar that would make Glenn Branca and Robert Poss proud. This is crucial post-metalcore coming from a darker, filthier corner of the dungeon, and which pulls it's weight alongside the likes of THE OCEAN, ISIS, KNUT, CULT OF LUNA, etc. Most highly recommended!

Gunmoll - Board of Rejection

10. Apology of a Lifetime
11. Make Yourself Bleed

13. Ryan Murphy's Song

Info

UNMOLL represented, at the outset, a new generation of bands burning on the fuel of inspiration laid down by the likes of JAWBREAKER, LEATHERFACE, and HOT WATER MUSIC, with a bittersweet dark edge akin to ALKALINE TRIO. Equally, the band was an abrupt turn and catalyst for members Jon Marburger, who drummed in the influential and innovative word-of-mouth, tug-at-your-heartstrings cult phenomenon I HATE MYSELF and Derron Nuhfer, who played Bari Sax for six years with pop-punk scientists LESS THAN JAKE, and who moved to bass and backing vocals for GUNMOLL.

Both wanted change and to start something new! “Board of Rejection” immediately jumps out of the speakers with a huge sound and a vibrance that is unparalleled. The vocals are hard-hitting, yet with inescapable melody lines and instantly memorable turns of phrase. The guitars are intricate yet direct: power chords with subtle flourishes coming to the forefront. Thunderous basslines continue the themes laid down and solidify the framework between. Powerful drumming, on-a-dime tight, stylistically fluid: every sound is clear, from the brightest cymbal ring to the heaviest floor tom resolve.

This is the pinnacle achievement for GUNMOLL: a no-bullshit, anthemic testament to years spent drenched in the sweat and noise pouring out of the hot, humid, moldy warehouses of Gainesville, Florida! On beautiful BLUE or GOLD vinyl and no, you don't get to pick!

The Mushroom River Band - Simsalabim

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

01-Simsalabim
02-Bugs
03-Make It Happen
04-Change It
05-My Vote Is Blank
06-Tree Of No Hope
07-Proud Of Being Cool
08-Time Laps
09-The Big Sick Machine
10-Run, Run, Run

Info

So here it is, the successor of the most praised debut, and one thing's sure from the very beginning, "Simsalabim" is enchanting in the same manner as "Music For The World Beyond" and continuing the work of the year 2000.

The Scandinavians have the great capability to connect extremely dry Hard Rock of the 70s with the heaviness of Metal and also avoid drowning in clichés. Like the similar colleagues from the same country of the SPIRITUAL BEGGARS which were temporary supported by singer Spice who sang their classic "Ad Astra" and also played bass, THE MUSHROOM RIVER BAND can convince you with rousing music, an enormous feeling for unforgettable melodies and almost endless joy of playing.

What makes the difference between them and their fellow bands is that the rockers from Sweden like to put their foot on the gas and therefore are not quite easy to be classified. On the one hand there are pretty fast and angrily heavy songs like the opening track, but the following "Bugs" or "Tree Of No Hope" are much calmer and diamonds like "My Vote Is Blank" or "The Big Sick Machine" have been created. In those moments THE MUSHROOM RIVER BAND slightly reminds you of the big ones of the American Stoner Rock community and also proves how various they are in here.

Above all the musical pour-outs by Anders Linusson (guitars), Saso (bass) and Chris Rockström (drums) there's the charismatic and unmistakable singing of the band leader Spice. And - no offense to the performance of his crew - this points out again how important an excellent singer is for a band.

Where other bands wrestle with their destiny, have uninspired singers and so drown in being mediocre, THE MUSHROOM RIVER BAND overviews things and assassinates most of their competitors with a big fat grin.

05. healing yesteryear
06. shallow like sand
07. the truth machine
08. 10.21
09. november's neverending
10. an ocean apart

Info

It starts with a track of crickets and piano, images of the night, bueaty. Then the second track hits, a burage of heavy vocals and driving music. skaycamefalling is one of the most dynamic bands that I have listened to in a long time. The lyrics, full of bueaty and pain at the same time. I really got hung up on the lyrics, here is a sample of some that really caught my atteintion. "My wrists so saddened by dull razorblades ", "These sand-castles we so carefully built. The waves crash in ", "Just leave me hear, just let me lie here for a moment to watch all of my dreams collapse before me ", "with my head in my hands I let my tears run ", and "My tears run for so long that I have gotten used to the taste ". I guess i really got into them cause i feel like i can relate to the lyrics, maybe thats a reason im so passionate about this band. Its really emotional stuff, but at the same time heavy. This is a must have cd in my opinion for those who like emotional hardcore. If you like from autumn to ashes, taken, or thursday, i think you will get into this cd.

Bravo Fucking Bravo - II

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1- We Fight With Swords
2- The Vixens
3- Denelonette
4- Feed The Motherfuckers To The Sharks
5- Jean-Claude God Damn
6- Part 2
7- Friends With All The Dead Kids
8- Doctor Hot Shit
9- The New Testament
10- Making Machines Out Of Water

The style of hardcore that Bravo Fucking Bravo is similar in a sense to that of the technical-core bands, but there seems to be a heavy hard rock/metal influence that moderates the amounts of effete wankery that the band can burden on its listeners. The most interesting thing about Bravo Fucking Bravo is the tension that they create with each of their tracks; the screaming present by Myke is always at a certain level of intensity even if the backing instrumentation is slow and contemplative (like in “Feed The Motherfuckers To The Sharks”).

“Feed The Motherfuckers” also has another thing going for it; the repetition achieved by the band in the second half of the track really drives home the message of the track to each and every listener. Finishing off the first section of “II” with their “Jean-Claude God Damn”, Bravo Fucking Bravo find their Venus di Milo in the simple, half-sung half –spoken vocals that are strewn throughout the track. This intricate brand of vocals comes back in a major way during “Doctor Hot Shit”, something that is put further in the stratosphere by solid guitars and perfectly-splashing drumlines. “The New Testament” is another track in the vein of screamed-out hardcore that Bravo Fucking Bravo make themselves known for on “II”, but there is a punk spontaneity to their sound that really freshens this disc up at a time when most other discs are reeling. The band has not been around too terribly long, but the sound that they lay down on “II” is some of the most furious and well-balanced hardcore rock to come out.

Each band members has their own place on each track, and what comes forth is a complete sounding act. The ending track on “II”, “Making Machines Out Of Water” is by far the longest (almost topping five minutes) on the disc; it provides a definitive end to what was a maelstrom of furious arrangements and even more brutal vocals. The production, the fact that every arrangement sounds polished yet human at the same time – Bravo Fucking Bravo is miles beyond what any other hardcore band is doing now and this is even taking into consideration acts like Converge and Bleeding Through. Well worth the cost of a CD and even more worth a live performance, there is no doubt in my mind that Bravo Fucking Bravo could come up with another album or two that is more of the same high quality.

Info

This really isn't normally my thing, but I liked the MP3 at www.cahrecords.com, so I thought I'd give this album a shot. This is thrash metal for Scandinavian HC thrash lovers, and it is nothing short of incendiary. This is a great blend of both points of view. The metal doesn't get in the way of the intense fury because the song writing is so solid. It isn't overtly simple, but it doesn't muddle itself down in musical masturbation either. The lyrics are senseless death metal gibberish, but in this instance, with this level of insane thrash, I can overlook that hapless fact. The production is nearly perfect. The screamed, throaty vocals and the instruments compliment each other well, and the end result is a solid wall of energy.

Trapdoor Fucking Exit - Crooked Life / Straight World (Pet.)

4. Swastika Heads

7. Distractions
8. Disillusionist Recovery Program
9. Gratitude to Gravity
10. February is Slow

Info

Trapdoor Fucking Exit are a volatile band. Just take a look at their uncompromising name. They might have borrowed it from some obscure art-rock band but in their hands it is as much a warning as it is a welcome. If we accept post-hardcore as a sub-genre of punk rock then TFE are very much a post-hardcore band. The requisite post-hardcore weapons are all present, including gravel throated vocals, pummelling bass and drums and nerve shredding guitars. They are even signed to No Idea, a record label that almost defines the post-hardcore aesthetic.

Except there is something a little off centre, maybe even left of field, about TFE. What this Swedish quartet do on their third album ’Crooked Life/Straight World’ does not sit too pretty with more formulaic punk rock. There could be a few reasons for this unquantifiable strangeness. Firstly TFE are fucking angry and don’t care who knows about it. I mean genuine rage. You can almost feel the phlegm of discontent as Henke Andersson spits out his bitter words. TFE’s anger is directed at a failing world and its apathetic failing leaders.

It is musically, though, where TFE really depart from the norm and where the slight weirdness creeps in, the weirdness that differentiates them from others of their ilk. Songs like ‘Ride Your Pig’ taste like souring milk. Thankfully ,TFE will not make the unwary listener gag and retch. 'D.O.A.’ and ‘Distractions’ rival Hot Snakes for straight, down-the-line hard rocking mayhem. ‘Disilliusionist Recovery Program’ could be an even meaner and more misanthropic take on Australian legends The Saints. ‘Swastika Heads’ is as filled with twisted turmoil as Refused at their bleakest. ‘Ride Your Pig’ is a saucy swagger down Stooges street. There is a depth and breadth to TFE, as well as a unique ability to wear their influences on their sleeve and yet still sound unique. For those who like their punk rock noisy, mean and powerful, TFE could well be for you.

Info

The on-again-off-again career of Lethargy appears to finally be over. As a final tribute, Spoth records released this double CD, which is basically everything they've ever recorded. Included are their 1996 album _It's Hard to Write With a Little Hand_ [CoC #14], the _Humor Me_ demo [1995, CoC #4], the _Tainted_ demo (my personal favorite, 1994), the _Lost in This Existence_ demo (1993), the two songs from the Watchmen comps [1997 and 1998, CoC #27], three songs from 1999, and the unplugged version of "Lost in This Existence" from their split with Big Hair (1994). It adds up to 32 songs, clocking in at a whopping 133 minutes. Their style can be described as "palsycore", meaning that it's a hardcore/metal hybrid with spastic riff and tempo changes and little regular song structure. Human Remains would be a good comparison, though Lethargy are generally less extreme and more convoluted. Their riffs aren't always technical, but the way they are organized makes for a challenging listen. Riffs are thrown together in a hodge-podge style, with no thought given to song flow or development. But impressively, the band is rock solid even for the most difficult sections, where the riffs last only a few seconds each. And this lack of structure is itself a structure, giving the band their distinctive sound. Fans of technical and quirky death metal should pick this up. Highest recommendations.

Info

Death Threat come back with an album that does and doesn’t sound like them. For God and Government is a lot faster and better produced album than the previous Peace and Security. Instead of the somewhat typical metal core that adorned the last album, the band takes a more traditional approach to hardcore that at first sounds uncharacteristic but it all works out in the end. The break downs are still brutal as ever but the build up is quicker and more complimenting to them. Instead of keeping the same mid-tempo throughout the song they change things up a bit by throwing in a lot of speed and it feels like a good progression in the bands sound. The same bitter and pissed off lyrics are back in full effect as well but instead of making them totally personal a few of the songs are more of a rally cry for hardcore and punk rock kids. Maybe this album is an indication of the band moving in a different direction while trying to cling to their roots. Come on, the band that wrote “Dead at Birth” and “Life Sentence” is now doing Op Ivy covers?

Info

Planes Mistaken For Stars (also known as Planes or PMFS) are a punk rock/hardcore punk band formed in Peoria, Illinois in 1997. They have released music on Deep Elm and No Idea Records.

Planes are known for being the gritty, sweaty, long-haired band you wouldn't want to take home to mom. They began as an aggressive yet melodic emo band, all but abandoning the genre before its popularity reached the mainstream. These days Planes has more in common with stoner rock than emo, growing more aggressive and experimental with every record.

Lead singer and guitarist Gared O'Donnell started the Peoria, Illinois band with guitarist Matt Bellinger, bassist Aaron Wise, and drummer Mike Ricketts. Shortly after the band self-released a self-titled EP, Wise was replaced by Jamie Drier. At this time Deep Elm offered to repackage and distribute the EP which was re-released in the spring of '99.

In 2000, PMFS took part in a mass migration to Denver, Colorado with more than fifteen friends. After the move, the band recorded their second release for Deep Elm, Knife In The Marathon. In 2001, Planes moved over to Gainesville Florida's No Idea Records to release Fuck With Fire. The next year they released a 7" titled Spearheading The Sin Movement and also made an appearance on Black On Black: A Tribute To Black Flag.

In 2003, Planes saw their second line up change. Jamie Drier left the band and was replaced by Chuck French. Chuck played his first show with Planes on November 2nd, 2003.

Later that year, Planes recorded Up In Them Guts with A.J. Mogis, who's most notable work is with Saddle Creek artists Bright Eyes and The Faint. Up In Them Guts was released in the summer of 2004 on No Idea Records. To promote the record, the band took on one of the lenghthiest tour schedules of their career, covering the United States and Europe with a bands such as The Ataris, Cursive, Against Me!, Dillinger Escape Plan, Hot Water Music and High On Fire on six separate, and very diverse tours. They also made festival appearances at Skate And Surf Fest, Strhess Fest, and Hellfest.

In 2005, Planes completed three additional headlining tours. One in the UK, and two in the US.

Despite rumors of the band signing with legendary metal label Relapse Records, they announced a deal with Abacus Recordings in the fall of 2005. That fall also brought the departure of longtime guitarist and band co-founder, Matt Bellinger, who's currently pursuing an alt-country direction with Denver's Ghost Buffalo. Soon after, a changing of the guard took place, bringing bassist Chuck French over to second guitar and adding new bassist/old friend Neil Keener (Red Cloud West, Git' Some) to the four piece mix.

The late spring of 2006 brought Planes to the city of Seattle, where they're currently recording with Matt Bayles their first full length for Century Media's Abacus Records. Bayles is most noted for his work with Botch, Isis, Mastodon, and Minus the Bear. The new record is expected to be released sometime in the early fall of this year.

Remember BOTCH? Remember listening to them so much that your head hurt and everything about your life felt dangerous and sad? Well these ex-TO DREAM OF AUTUMN kids do, like it was yesterday. And that's not a criticism either, because it would be nice if more bands remembered BOTCH. Basically what we have here is a sort of rudimentary take on the late 1990s metalcore style; the vocals sound more punk than tough with political lyrics, we get a few ambient noise parts that are kind of scary, there's still a lot of chug going on at the low end, with dissonant bends at the high end and a reasonable amount of time changes.

If that sounds like a somewhat lukewarm description, it's because those are just the building blocks. The stuff that floored me were the little touches. While the drumming is underdeveloped (and mixed low), the guitarist has dialed in an amazing shriek to the tone. It's almost as if he said, "OK, when in doubt I'm just going to throw in an insane dissonant bend to spice things up and hurt people's ears." It's awesome, and it gives it an almost '80s thrash/crossover vibe at times, with a "fuck it, let's rip" attitude that kind of balances out the relatively stoic and rigid vibe of lots of metalcore. Unfortunately the drums are sort of lacking and the bass isn't very dynamic. There's something very tinny about the drums, partially due to production (which could benefit from a little bit of HIS HERO IS GONE influence) but also to the style, where the drummer often accentuates the guitar by hitting the snare, which makes the drum sound a little tidy, like "a place for everything and everything and everything in its place," rather than a menacing force with a lot of momentum.

But when they get a chance to run with a song rather than penning it in, holy shit! Everything gets really thunderous and psychedelic in a super-dark acid trip sort of way, and you can overlook the stingy production and rock a little. If you were a PG. 99 or a Hydra Head Records fan at the end of last century, this will be dug by you.

3- The Dream Continues
4- A Morbid Gathering
5- The Path
6- Comfort Made Us Passive
7- Error Is Progress
8- Confessions
9- The Presents Forsaken
10- A Hopeful Sound
11- Embrace The Current Of Time
12- Let Us Resonate

Info

Formed in Early 2001 by Brad Wallace and Will Killingsworth, both former members of Orchid, Bucket Full of Teeth was conceived as a friendly venture in playing generic powerviolence but instantaneosly evolved into much more. The band quickly become more interested in pushing conventions of heavy music and punk rock, and in 2002 released 3 7"s simultaneously as a first attempt at personal experimentation and musical destruction.

Having only played 6 shows ever, and primarily a studio project, Bucket Full of Teeth began work on new material in 2002. Between membership changes, and other members serving time in Ampere, Wolves, and Transistor Transistor, Bucket Full of Teeth have constructed this final recording, fusing elements of Death Metal, Ambient, Psychedlic, Prog, Thrash and Stoner Rock into a cohesive whole much better serving the original musical thesis attempted in their early recordings.Self-Recorded and painstakingly edited and revised at Dead Air Studios over the past two years Bucket Full of Teeth have produced a collage of sonic destruction both heavy and unpredictable. The band has said this will be their final release but rumors of working on new material and live incarnations surface often.

Yeti - Volume, Obliteration, Transcendence

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1. Cusp Of Something You Don't Understand (11:57)
2. Strangled By Light (15:13)
3. Blood Lotus (6:56)
4. Black Pills (19:05)

Info

YETI is one of the few bands that you are going to encounter that absolutely defy categorization. Their tremendously multifaceted music manages to be dense yet airy and spacious. Complex yet minimalistic. Harsh yet beautiful. Ultramodern yet primitive. It is futuristic yet owes much debt to jazz and post-modern classicists who no doubt pre-date the members of YETI by decades. Try to imagine an avant-garde and anti-music amalgamation of space rock, jazz, death metal, goth, and chamber music. That is YETI... music that is as mysterious (and potentially dangerous) as the legendary creature for which the band is named.

Info

Scandinavia's TRAPDOOR FUCKING EXIT don't nail the sweet spot between the frenetic garage sound of their neighbors TURBONEGRO and the angular hardcore of REFUSED, but they come just close enough to get you on the edge of your seat and wide-eyed at various
moments on Be Not Content. "Everything is Winding Down" is the sound of rock unraveling and winding up again; "God's Forgotten Apologies" is an epic journey up and down Rock Mountain; and "Automathics" feels like a garage door opening and closing on the listener's head with complex, precise brutality. It's hard to take heed and be not content, especially after such an enjoyable beating.

Twelve Tribes - the rebirth of tragedy

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

3. Translation Of Fixes
4. Venus Complex
5. Backburner
6. Chroma
7. Train Bridge, The
8. Godshaped War
9. Luma
10. Flight Of The Pathogen

Info

American hardcore/metal merchants Twelve Tribes have been kicking around for a few years now, but they're not exactly a household name, either at home or here in the UK.

On the face of it, all the constituent elements for quality are in place - cool band name, excellent CD artwork, thoughtful lyrics and a host of musical influences, which, according to the press release, are as wide as Public Enemy, Faith No More, Converge and Metallica.

Alas, the reality is somewhat different. Rebirth Of Tragedy is supposedly Twelve Tribes' response to an ever-increasing homogeneity amongst metal-core bands, and yet, for all the band's protestations, it does little to commend itself beyond the pile of "solid but unspectacular" albums produced by that particular musical scene in the past few years.

Opener Post Replica sums up Twelve Tribes "problem", if you will. There's a sloping, angular riff, the rhythms fracture and change cleverly and Adam Jackson's vocals are typically hardcore of the semi-vomit variety. It's perfectly serviceable but nothing more, and if the semi-rap towards the end is supposed to be where the Public Enemy and Faith No More influences show themselves, then they need to spin Bring The Noise and Epic again. After having had their ears syringed.

The majority of the remainder of the album is similar fare. Solid? Yes. Unspectacular? Yes. Dislikeable? No. Exciting? Not even with your clothes off.

Occasionally things pick up a little. Venus Complex is actually damn good, with a cascading guitar intro; brutal drumming and thrashing; melodic vocals mixed with epiglottis-ruining screams; and a curiously uplifting chorus that presumably most realistic people can relate to: "If I could have it all, it wouldn't be enough."

So, there is life within these here bones. Maybe next time Twelve Tribes should not set themselves such lofty ambitions, or at the very least, not make such a big deal out of telling everyone that they're here to reinvent a musical genre. Rebirth Of Tragedy is certainly "hard" but there's simply not enough to make you go, "Cor!"

9. 4:25 Dead To Rights
10. 3:05 The Conversation
11. 5:53 Powder Burns
12. 4:20 I Wish I Was

Info

This long awaited album (Produced by Steve Albini - Neurosis, Nirvana) proves itself to be one of the heaviest of 2000. This record is relentless, bone crushing head splitting music that never lets up from start to finish. Thick ass guitars, ballistic drumming and vocals that are just plain pissed off take you into the lungs of hell. Info
