InfoMention Agathocles in certain crust/grind circles and many will speak of the band in hushed, reverent tones. Their legendary status, coupled with many, many obscure releases and five years since their last full-length effort had led me to believe the band was no longer together. Little did I know, Agathocles has released a dozen or so splits in the same five period and are very much alive and kicking.
The band play what they call "mince-core" which is really just a fairly unique blend of crust, grind, punk, gore, and trash. Amongst crust/grind groups, they are surprisingly lite on the thrash elements, opting for a little more sloppy, gory sound. The lyrics however are pure socio-political fury, with only small hints at gore sprinkled throughout. Vocally, bassist Jan and guitarist Dirk switch off between low gurgling vocals and a high-pitched, blackened rasp, often times layering the two styles for a unique effect.
Agathocles has been around for 14+ years and have an extremely expansive discography with a very loyal, underground following and a cult-like status. That being said, many people are going to get this regardless of what I say. My job is to convince the uninitiated. If you are into sloppy, gory grindcore but long for a bit more of a crust/punk aestheic (or vice versa) then look no further than Mincer. If you are wanting a clinically precise, polished grind album, this one is not for you.
