2. Thousand Miracles
3. Backwards Through
4. Here Comes The Rain Again
5. Words Into Nothing
6. I Believe
7. Spring Break
8. Medicine
9. My Way Out

Info

5. Freezing Process
6. Lie And Wait***
7. Unfulfilled
8. Can Opener
9. Omission
10. Baphomet
11. Too Official
12. Transparent

Info

Listening to this album will make you want to quit your day job and start your own hardcore band. Quicksand's ability to make sheer disappointment seem so utterly inspiring is something to which we all should aspire. When you hear the album's opening drum roll and guitar riff in "Fazer" you unknowingly whip out the old air guitar moves and rage with Walter as he screams, "all sense aside, left out in the cold sight of your routine getting old."

Anchored in New York City's hardcore scene, Quicksand pool their collective edge and aggression together to give you one of the most accessible and exceptional albums of the past decade. This album is fiercely heavy and honest. Quicksand's music is an all out sonic attack on your senses, senses that have been dulled for far too long anyway. Walter's throaty voice and disenchanted lyrics combined with the weighted dissonance of the guitars make you realize how long its been since you heard something this raw and honest. If you play it right, this album should make your teeth hurt.

19. 2:27 goredom - boredom
20. 1:08 where it belongs
21. 1:03 mincer

Info

Mention Agathocles in certain crust/grind circles and many will speak of the band in hushed, reverent tones. Their legendary status, coupled with many, many obscure releases and five years since their last full-length effort had led me to believe the band was no longer together. Little did I know, Agathocles has released a dozen or so splits in the same five period and are very much alive and kicking.

The band play what they call "mince-core" which is really just a fairly unique blend of crust, grind, punk, gore, and trash. Amongst crust/grind groups, they are surprisingly lite on the thrash elements, opting for a little more sloppy, gory sound. The lyrics however are pure socio-political fury, with only small hints at gore sprinkled throughout. Vocally, bassist Jan and guitarist Dirk switch off between low gurgling vocals and a high-pitched, blackened rasp, often times layering the two styles for a unique effect.

Agathocles has been around for 14+ years and have an extremely expansive discography with a very loyal, underground following and a cult-like status. That being said, many people are going to get this regardless of what I say. My job is to convince the uninitiated. If you are into sloppy, gory grindcore but long for a bit more of a crust/punk aestheic (or vice versa) then look no further than Mincer. If you are wanting a clinically precise, polished grind album, this one is not for you.

Info

3. 2:25 Deliverance
4. 4:11 Bandit Queens / Pauper Kings
5. 1:00 Kick It Till It Breaks
6. 6:15 The Border
7. 4:28 In Darkness
8. 3:36 Defeat
9. 2:39 Unleash Hell
+ Bonus tracks live

Info

Formed from the wreckage of other bands (cough, Catharsis, cough -Ed.) that set out to rescue the world from Western civilization only to end in ashes and defeat, Requiem has refused to record anything until now lest they perpetuate the commodity-oriented stupor that mires the would-be revolutionary underground in verbose inactivity. Finally, they have composed a half hour of music they feel might be able to do more to break hearts and inspire insane acts of resistance than it does to promote consumption and spectatorship. In nine tracks that range from mournful, muted beauty to operatic hardcore punk to the apocalyptic marching drums of street rioting, they pit raw fury and yearning against everything ugly in a desperate bid to rescue punk rock (not to mention music and modern life in general) from its own inertia. If music can be no more powerful than the context in which it is made, then we are lucky these full-time revolutionaries and lunatics have taken time out of their demanding regimens—not to mention stayed out of prison long enough—to fashion for us this epic of tragedy and defiance.

Impure Wilhelmina - Afraid

2. 3:36 Calling Tears
3. 5:20 Negativity Dose
4. 5:27 Stand-By
5. 6:05 Black Water
6. 5:46 Disappoint Me
7. 3:48 Fire Worship
8. 4:49 Never Come Out
9. 10:44 Melt

Info

Ten years of blood and passion. Formed in Geneva in 1996, Impure Wilhelmina released a 7”, an MCD, “Undressing your soul” (1998), and a first self-produced album, “Afraid” (1999). On this album, the band plays a very sludgy and monolithic music, but with a very personal melodic touch.

After a first tour in France with Ordeal (Lausanne), Impure Wilhelmina released a split-CD with them, on Division Records.
In 2002, after almost one year of composition, the second full-lentgh of Impure Wilhelmina, “I can’t believe I was born in july” was released in co-production by Waiting for an Angel and Space Patrol Records (France). Heavy, melodic, intense, desperate, angry…and more…everything was said about this record.

The band toured in France with Weeping mind of Silence (june 2003) and then Overmars (January 2004), in front of an increasing and enthusiastic audience.

The record of their third album, “L’amour, la mort, l’enfance perdue”, took place in november 2004, and was released in april 2005 through Space Patrol Records. This record is a 69 minutes trip into a large panel of emotions : violent and vicious beauty, heavy walls of riffs and subtle songs structures. A video clip of the song “Before a dream” was shot during summer 2005.

After a line-up change, impure Wilhelmina hit the road with their friends Knut, and are actually touring and working on new songs.

LA PAN - Todo va bien

Tracklist

3. 2:57 La Pan
4. 3:25 La fuerza de la razón
5. 3:40 Mantente (1998)

9. 3:05 Monos
10. 4:28 El mismo HP
11. 3:41 Piyei Ramírez
12. 3:13 Álvarez Cascos Doberman Cascos

Info

6. 2:38 Robin... I'll Be Back In Five Minutes
7. 5:22 Sant Feliu
8. 3:43 Stay Indie, Don't Be A Hater
9. 5:52 I Don't Like Who You're Hanging Out With

Info

I don’t like who you’re hanging out with”. Reveladores.

Info

About 6 minutes shy of a million years after their formation the Southern Cal gods of thrash violence finally rip the entire universe a new one with their debut long player. It's about time guys. LACK OF INTEREST are the purest old school style thrash band embraced by the power violence scene. They are strongly reminiscent of early eighties hate core legends like NEGATIVE FX and NEGATIVE APPROACH. They have the same intensity, the same rawness, the same anger and the same classic vibe. "Trapped Inside" features newly recorded songs that span most of the band's career including their calling card "My Life" which is THE thrash anthem of the nineties. There are 24 tracks on this puppy and a good half of them run less than thirty seconds (only three of them break the one minute barrier) consequently this album kills with a speed and power not unlike being strapped into an electric chair. This is the band and this is the album that you can cram down the throat of the next jaded old fart who tries to tell you that "punk is dead".

Info

Ok here is an album most people have not heard, but should hear. Originally released in 1994 Drive Like Jehu’s Yank Crime is one of the loudest albums I ever heard. Written in the time when the air waves were plagued with grunge impersonators Yank Crime offered an aggressive, powerful, intense change to the typical “grunge” music that was popular at the time. The attitude on the album is very punk, no bullshit, no whining. This is definately one of the last great punk/indie records. A must in the collection

Facedowninshit - nothing positive, only negative

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tracklist

1. Plasma Center Blues
2. NPON
3. Countless
4. Ten Strip
5. Association Of Known Undesirables
6. Fucked
7. Rough Sleep

Info

Facedowninshit melds the ethos of hardcore and punk, the sincerity of blues, and a forceful urgency to create their own unique brand of southern fried dirt metal. On NPON (Nothing Positive, Only Negative), the trio delivers honesty that resonates in every word, every D.I.Y-till-I-die riff, and through every last beat of the drums. Ugly, crude, ragged, and raw, NPON is Facedowninshit's manifesto and a new call to arms for the international extreme scene.

The best way to describe this band is to imagine a picture that fits to their name. This is a dark and scary place where you take your last breath. This is really evil stuff. Tuned-down guitars and hammering drums combine to a worst-case-scenario nightmare

7. 2:49 Dig
8. 2:04 Lose One's Sight
9. 4:41 Karb
10. 7:37 Other Suggestions And So On

Info

Fuck yes! Oh fuck, fuck, fucking yes! This French act unloads some pounding fucking monolithic excellence in the vein of the finer side of the Hydra Head camp (think Isis, Knut, and so forth - decidedly more the latter than the former), blending doomy, sludgy, rhythmic dirges with a more caustic and abrasive side - often with fucked up shifts and time signatures involved. And it punishes. The recording sounds like a million bucks with hugely resonant percussion, sick distorted bass, perfectly crunchy and forceful guitars, searing vocal screams, and a dead even mix with perfect cohesion and ample clarity. Holy shit, I love this. The songwriting fairly consistently sways to and fro with lots of changes, but it all makes sense and stays unified in the end, so despite the presence of copious amounts of dissonance it's very tangible and rhythmically massive. The bass tone really does play a huge part in making this stuff so oppressive, and I totally love the vocals as well, because they're just relentless throat scorching screams that aren't at all irritating. "Pale" is a little chunkier with some start/stop rhythms (not the groovy variety, trust me), but "Dead End" closes side A with a little more twisted melody (even vocally, hinting at singing) in the vein of a band like Burst or something like that, adding a technical nuance that really stands out and highlights how tight and accurate the playing is here. Side B opens with the repetitive instrumental "Suppose Control Can Increase", leaning in on a slight Godflesh influence different from most of the other tracks herein, and every damn bit as effective. Closer "Other Suggestions and So On" follows a few harsher cuts with a more openly melodic side using octave chords and slightly more streamlined chord progressions, slowing down to a nice crawl at times and letting the notes really ring forth. The LP comes on clear vinyl an amazing gatefold sleeve with a strict color palette (almost exclusively shades of blue and yellow) and a layout structured very much in the Hydra Head school of repeating textural patterns, complete with excellent use of subtle gloss overlay printing for the band name and some of the patterns on the outer cover. The lyrics fit the tone of the music perfectly, too: "We fucked up our lives and didn't even turn back to pick up what we left on the ground, We screwed up everything we touched, invariably, We didn't have enough humor for a single exception, We crawled toward the spring and we weren't thirsty at all, We forgot to live our lives and didn't even laugh when the party began…" To my great dismay my copy of the sleeve got ruined in a recent tropical storm when my roof decided to leak profusely, so thankfully I was able to get the LP cleaned up enough to play perfectly! I plan to buy another copy of this ASAP, as well as scoring the CD pressing, because this shit rules. The LP is limited to only 500 copies though, so act fast if you'd like to snag one, and I highly fucking recommend it. I'm so glad this showed up in my mailbox, because this band deserves a shitload more attention, and something tells me they're going to be criminally underrated unless someone steps up. So please, by all means, fucking check this out. Do yourself a favor… Man, I love this. Great, great work.

Info

DEL CIELO - Us Vs. Them

4. Joe Goth
5. Wreck
6. Second Chance To Think
7. My Suzanne
8. Cry Your Eyes Out
9. Richmond
10. Scream
11. You Win

Info

Sometimes a battle with yourself can lead to a battle of sound. Del Cielo, an alternative rock band from Maryland, recently put out a new CD, Us Vs. Them. Interestingly enough, the sound is more of a clash among themselves. Songs like "Too Scared" and "Cry Your Eyes Out" have a hard edge sound accompanied by the beautiful voices of Andrea Lisi and Basla Andolsun, two of the three members of this female band. Hard at times and heart felt at others, most songs carry a basic theme of anger and frustration.

"Too Scared," the first song on their CD, is an example of expertly played instruments with an amazing sound worthy of regular radio rotation. The strong bass mixed with solid vocals makes it a song you'll definitely want to rock out to. Katy Otto, the drummer, also holds the songs together with awesome beats, adding to the magnificent melody these ladies have produced.

The music is strong, if only the lyrics were to match. Lyrics seemed to lack in substance and depth. The voices, although beautiful, also could be stronger in points. That said, this band is still amazingly gifted. This album is great for anyone who likes mainstream rock and exquisite female voices.
